FYI that engine was actually a way of VW to put a large displacement ( 2.9 and 2.8 liters, yes, for Europe that is BIG ) in small cars, B3 being pretty small under the hood at that time. ( 1988–1993 )
V6 would not fit in, so they redesigned the engine block, 10.5 to 15 degrees between cylinder banks, as opposed to the traditional V6, and make it more compact.
It is still in production today, modified and upgraded.
