Using pibox one for my use case although it's not extraordinary and is just rebranded OEM product originated in PRC it's serving it's purpose well enough. It costed me around 950 INR and certainly worth the money.
Why hide the sexy apple logo
If you want cheap, get any 10Gbps one with thermal pads that make good contact, don't get any of the ones where you "slide" the enclosure over the SSD.
If you want speed, get one based on Asmedia ASM2464PD. Gives you the full 40Gbps. Read more here: https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/2024/01/01/list-of-ssd-enclosure-chipsets-2022/
If you have the M4 Mac Mini, I think you can buy NAND upgrades on Aliexpress.
I see
Are you using it on Macbook?? or Mini?
Does it live up to its 10Gbps claim?
Using it on macbook air, and it averages at 7gbps for me sometimes touching 9gbps but I haven't seen it go past 9gbps.
I used to run a M1 mini and now a M4 mini, and the easiest and cheapest way to do fast NVMe as others have mentioned is a cheap USB4 NVMe enclosure. I picked my current enclosure up for like $70 CAD (~$50 freedom bucks) with free shipping from AliExpress and it runs like a charm, even as the boot drive.
For the first few years though, I ran a Orico Thunderbolt 3 enclosure, which was reliable but lacked a good active cooling system. Current ones should cost around $60 CAD (~$40 freedom bucks) on sale.
On the other hand, for less than half of that you can grab a 20Gb/s USB 3 Gen 2x2 enclosure and that'll probably work fine too as external storage (no experience booting the OS off a non-TB drive, YMMV).
Note: You do lose Apple Intelligence for external volume boot... but I see that as a feature, not a bug. You can re-enable it through a series of commands, but given its state, I'd avoid it for now.
bought one from orico, waiting for arrival
40gbps
but pcie 3.0 x4
No use hitting higher than PCIe 3x4 because of TB3/TB4 limitations, but it should do just fine
pcie 3.0 x4 is bit less than 40gbps
and macbook m1 has 40gbps port...
we'll see
i bought one with clear case, hope can mod it a little (visual)
