    You're right to think about BMW, as they were among the early adopters of the CAN bus system, but it was actually Mercedes-Benz that first implemented the CAN system in a production car.

    The Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class, released in 1991, was indeed the first production vehicle to use the CAN system for communication between electronic control units (ECUs). This system significantly improved how the car's various systems (like engine management, air conditioning, and other features) communicated with each other.

    BMW, however, also embraced the CAN bus technology soon after, integrating it into their models, but Mercedes-Benz holds the distinction of being the first to implement it in a production car.
