Anyone manage to install Windows 2025 on Hetzner cloud?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone successfully installed the Windows 2025 ISO on a Hetzner cloud server? I know their Intel CPUs only support BIOS (not UEFI), which seems to cause issues when booting after installation as 2025 seams to require UEFI. The system just gets stuck at the “Booting disk” screen and doesn’t proceed.

If anyone knows a workaround or solution to get Windows 2025 running, I’d really appreciate your input. I’m looking to offer Windows 2025 alongside other versions for RDP services.

Edit: To clarify, I need this to work for Shared Intel CPU plans not the Dedicated CPU plans.

Thanks!

  • When installing Windows 2025, in the beginning choose "Use previous version of setup". It will proceed as usual.

    Hey,
I don’t see that option. I’m installing Windows and drivers over a random Ubuntu version using their OS templates and drivers with mounting/unmounting feature. Every step is successful from disk, to install 100% then when it restarts it just gets stuck on Booting from disk.. which I think is due to windows 2025 requires UEFI. I’ve tried upgrading a 2022 version but I don’t see any upgrade options, if I manage to get 2025 running so I can take a snapshot of it and provide it as a template for Windows VPS provisioning for clients.

  • After you choose language and keyboard, it will come to this screen

Choose Use previous version of setup then proceed to install & mount Virtio drivers as usual.

Ohh! Clearly didn’t notice that. Thanks I’ll check it out now.

  • Yeah that worked for me. Otherwise, you can upgrade from Windows 2022 by mounting Win 2025 ISO then install from the CD drive.

I had my Microsoft account attached with a digital key so seams it’s using that

  • i have a legal key for windows server 2022, can i upgrade to windows server 2025?

Not sure about that. My keys (activated via CMD) are not working. However, it seems that Windows 2025 does not automatically shut down. It behaves similarly to Windows 11 —restricting personalization options but still running normally.

  • You can contact Hetzner to change the BIOS to UEFI. I've done it on several of my VMs.
