Looking for a server that is actually **located** in Morocco

Looking to get a server in Casablanca or Morocco in general (except Fez, Morocco).

Getting good servers that are physically housed in a data center in Morocco has been hard. It is a geographically and internet-wise significant country, but I am unsure why this has been so difficult.

International server vendors either do not have good local connectivity or are simply selling servers in Spain "geolocated" in Morocco. So, if anyone has a good server vendor to recommend and can send server IP addresses for us to check, that would be incredible. Thanks!!

A quick search online brings me to HOSTOWEB, who appears to have services in Casablanca and Rabat.

Maybe reach out to them to confirm the location of their Moroccan VPSes.

  • I saw capconnect.com among the list of "exotic" providers.

They seem to actually have an office in Morocco, but I have no way to verify their servers are there as well.

Did you try searching in french? You would have way more luck in french than in english and using "site:*.ma" to just get Morrocan sites

Thank you very much. We are one of their customers for a server in Fez. I asked them about servers in Casablanca, but they did not share the IP address range. I then reached out to them several times, but still no response.

They can point to their ASN, but because we do active measurements, nothing stands out to be located in any Moroccan city except for Fez. So, unless they can provide us with definite proof or an IP address to test, we can not reliably buy a server from them.

That is interesting. Let me look into it. Do you have suggestions on search phrases?

  • Inwi.ma provides VPS: https://inwi.ma/entreprise/vps

But I reached out to them several times. They require a Moroccan phone number to call me back. They do not respond to emails.

That's a resedential ISP/Phone company (Like Verizon for the US) that offers vpses on the side. I honestly would only use these types as a last resort.

This is pretty much a last-resort situation here! That is the case with several countries in Africa. I was able to get a few deals like this by cold emailing owners. But this company is so big that nobody knows who to reach to help us get the VMs.

What's your use case? Morocco isn't exactly a great country for connectivity and there are only a few data centres that one can colo.

Connectivity-wise, you're looking at Sparkle, Maroc Telecom and Orange. Apart from Orange and Sparkle, no other T1s are present. All international connectivity is subsea via Portugal, Spain and France - nothing downover to Africa. There are no IXPs in the country. Thus, with no telco market, no T1s and no IXPs, connectivity is super expensive and relatively poor in comparison to European countries just up from it.

Power is cheap, which is the only positive. Unless you need to reach Moroccan end users with super low latency, you'd be better off somewhere in Portugal.

There seems to be one, though only with 4 participants: https://bgp.tools/ixp/CAS-IX

Sadly not a "real" IXP because of the market and its location. It's N+One's and only available in their own data centre. Nobody's present because it makes no sense. The country's two telcos' primary PoPs are miles away in Fez; they're not going to backhaul traffic to participate in an IXP when there's quite literally zero incentive. They can simply sell transit instead.

  • I should add, it's about $350/mo for a 10G port to peer with... Cloudflare. Lol.

  • Maroc Telecom (#1 and #3 ASN in the country) seems to offer something cloud related.

I work for IPinfo. We have around 900 servers around the world. We run ping, traceroute, and other active measurements of IP addresses to generate IP geolocation data. The local connectivity aspect is a major reason why we need servers in Morocco. The servers we have tested all go through Spain, which creates significant noise for our use case.

Thank you very much for your insights! Shall I look into the upstreams of Moroccan ASNs for that? Do you have a recommendation?

Oh btw you can also try to use Facebook to chat with morrocan companies, It's still very popular for businesses in North Africa to do that, try adding a machine translated french version in case they don't understand english to your messages.

Their servers are not based in Morocco. They replied, "Unfortunately, we don't provide servers located in Morocco, our servers are based in Europe, specifically in Germany and Finland."

Nope, not for there. Oneprovider is the only one I know, but it's a fake location, they're actually in Malaga, Spain.
@Operable4829 you should ask your team to review https://ipinfo.io/188.214.157.0 again :)
Cogent doesn't have a PoP in Fez ;)

This strategy was thought of by one of my French colleagues (shoutout Max) as well. He googled in French and sent me a list of local providers. Because I had been burnt multiple times with buying a server, I focused on evaluating servers with IP ranges.

If you are interested in getting the name of the vendor DM me, please. I am still evaluating a couple of more vendors.

Hopefully, our (IPinfo) data will get much better in Northern Africa and across the Mediterranean region.

The legend himself! Sorry zGato for the late reply. That is exactly the reason why we are looking for a server in the first place. That is why we needed Casablanca to be true for all the Fez vs Malaga situation.

Now, that we have the server we can improve our data here.
