Cheap VPS providers for Nameservers?
Hi. I'm looking to host my own namesevers but I don't need anything powerful at all. It may be kinda imposible but I'm looking for something around 1USD monthly with a good uptime of course.
I will need two servers of course and I would prefer to have them on two different providers.
Any type of suggestion is appreciated.

10$/yr VPS - https://dartnode.com/warehouse-deals
(and Dartnode's monthly plan is $2/m but thats also good. (i use them before))
$11.29/yr VPS - https://www.racknerd.com/NewYear/
(I havn't use racknerd before so idk good or bad)
How about IPv6 only? Most public DNS support it
You could have multiple of them and one with IPv4 if needed
I don't have IPV6 so connecting to the VPS would be painful. I could use a Tunneling service like the one that HE offers but I'm not going to do that just to connect to one server.
Those look good. I actually use DartNode so I may pick that server. I don't like yearly payments but I don't think I can get something cheap with monthly payments. If it's about the fees, I can pay with crypto on a low fee network
What is your usage of nameserver?
Like If you are hosting provider and Nameserver will be part of your product, then you should use reliable VPS(s).
But If you are individual and Nameserver will be only used in personal purposes, I think single VPS with Good SLA is enough.
(also I want to know the reason why not simply use Cloudflare)
(when I am trying to create my own nameserver the reason was "own nameserver- sounds cool" btw)
I was kind of talking about NAT VPSes, that give you a few IPv4 ports
BTW for easy IPv6 you can use cloudflare warp. Personally I have SSH over VPN on every server so it doesn't bother me

Hopefully you'll find something from this list.
There are better specs if you go the yearly route.
Don't know why, but smells like fraud, scam and abuse.
Then there's this too:
RareCloud — €9.50 / year
1 Intel Cores (shared)
768 MB RAM
15 GB NVMe
1024 GB/month bandwidth
1.0 Gbps port speed
IPv4 + IPv6
Hosted in U.S.A.
There are easier and cheaper ways to fraud, scam and abuse. Most of those use cloudflare
What if they get affair with cf?

Best Regards,
Ava.hosting
Netcup if it should be Germany or Austria
have there one server and no downtime for over one year
but if it's only for DNS, why you don't go with Cloudflare?
As I researched, “custom nameserver” called "vanity nameserver" e.g.
ClouDNS's "Premium DNS" supported this as I remember. (if I'm wrong someone plz correct me).
I strongly suggest the managed solution.
Bunny DNS also supports vanity nameservers.
Oops.
Ionos.
are they operated by same person? or just mistake? 🤔
(well I should go other thread if we talk about this XD)

512 Mb/10G/1c.
8/y.
Its on colocrossing btw.
I host online privacy services since 2021. Since my services are Selfhosted and my ISP issues dynamic IP, my IP changes pretty often and I can't afford just relaying all the traffic from my server with dynamic IP to a VPS with static IP because I use ~100TB monthly.
The VPS would also need to have a good CPU to be able to keep up with the routed traffic (since I use wireguard (MeshVPN, Kernel Mode, tailscale sucks) to route traffic)).
I want it to be cost effective while maintaining control over the network.
I'm not making a product, this is just a hobby and I really like doing networking, that is what I'm aiming to host my own homesevers instead of using something like Cloudflare.
I don't trust cloudflare. Is not bad for stopping DDOS attacks, but for my purposes is an absolute no-no. They MITM a big part of the internet and they can decrypt everything (well, if you are Proxying the DNS record through their servers) and I'm not going to risk the personal data of the people that use my services. They also inject JS on the sites (not sure if this happens on unproxied records) and they can change the JS behavior whatever they like, for collecting data, analytics and who knows, whatever else may be possible with JS.
I see, so it's just your personal project.
then cheap vps from dartnode or racknerd is enough I think!
You enable those features. Without you enabling anti bot mode (adds javascript) or analytics (adds javascript), nothing is changed.
It sounds to me like what you need is mostly dynamic DNS since you selfhost. You could get a free duckdns subdomain for your selfhosted services and then just set up a CNAME to that domain with whatever DNS hoster you were using before.
Another option is Hetzner's DNS console, which doesn't do any proxy stuff but is reliable, free, and supported for wildcard certs via certbot/letsencrypt.
I do DDNS using my own ddns-script porkbun script for OpenWRT (I need to publish the package so it can be on the upstream ddns-scripts) so that is not a problem. I just want more control over the network. But that is out of scope of the question. Thanks for replying tho!
If it's for privacy then why you go with a VPS instead of a dedicated server?

cost effective
