@ralf Hey, I haven't been digging and commenting on older posts, because of the unwritten rule or rather an understanding among some of us to not indulge in that. You know of it, cause we talked about it a few days ago.

In most threads, I'd absolutely recommend looking back to see what the previous conversation was, but it's usually very useful. These kind of vendor threads / megathreads etc generally aren't that way. The goal of every provider is to generate as many comments as possible - because by including hashtag spam with something they've crafted as an advertising mechanism, it promotes their brand, even the pages and pages of "please double my X" shows other potential customers that other people have bought too. In megathreads with lots of providers, it's about getting people to notice your name as much as possible, and usually that's the smaller players who want every sale because the bigger players are able to run and curate their own threads for that.

... I should get out more to the other threads, being one of them. I do peek out of this thread and generally look into the other threads. ... Moreover, I am an introvert online and offline, been like that since some years now. Trying to break that. So, I do have the bad habit of getting into a routine and getting really comfortable with it.

Like I said, do what makes you happy, and as a introvert myself (for the most part and despite what it looks like here), I understand what you're saying.

... I foudn RackNerd at a very low point in my life. Spending time on the thread last year saved me from something unimaginable.

That's great to hear! Glad this place helped you out.

    1. Comparing threads for spam, imo, is unfair, cause, it's highly subjective.

For a person enjoying a thread with people he considers friends, throwing inside jokes all around, might be considered spam by a person just entering the thread.

To be clear, I wasn't talking at all about the content. I was talking about the competition to make as many posts as possible. When threads like this are created, and Dustin is the main one but there are others, there is exactly one reason why he wants you to make lots of posts. It's not about reaching a certain page number (although that gets some people excited, and sure can help build a sense of achieving something together), it's not about who is posting (although more people doing it point to a more diverse range of people, hence the double my X posts), it's certainly not about the content because there's just too much of it for him to read - even you guys aren't interested enough in the content to read back a few pages in general. Nope. There's exactly one reason these threads exist. Every time you click "post comment", the thread gets bumped to the top of the list and more people see "blah blah RACKNERD blah blah EMOJI blah blah FREE" and maybe someone browsing the forum will click on it out of curiosity - and then they see a wall of "here's my invoice number" and they think, hmmm, everyone else is buying it - it must be good, and so they buy something themselves. That's it. He doesn't care at all about the content. By incentivising a competition based on most posts, all he's doing is ensuring that his sales page is at the top of the forum. That's it. It creates enough sales that he can afford to drop a few thousand on prizes, because it's maybe got a few thousands of extra eyes seeing his deal.

    1. I have made it a habit to reciprocate in kind.

That's great and something that should be encouraged, but almost nothing that's worth sharing - whether about life or Linux configuration or whatever - is actually specific to any vendor. If you find some new cool program that you want to share with everyone, probably that 90% of the forum that don't ever visit RN threads would also be interested, maybe have something to add that helps you out in return.

And, from your words, I can concur that you seem to think I have this unhealthy obsession with RackNerd.

Again, I'm not saying you should leave the little community you have here. No doubt you'll have forged some great friendships here. But you should also remember that this thread wasn't created to help form a community, it's just a tool to increase sales. I get that you want to give something back to RN, and that's fine if it's something you want to do. But the reality is that actually, we're all (including myself because I've contributed to the post counts), all of us, are being used as tools to help advertising, and effectively being paid to do that by the chance of winning prizes. Ultimately, it's just a quid-pro-quo business deal.

The actual point I was making is that because you've all made it very personal instead of just seeing it as a business deal, you're working yourself far harder than you need to. The top 2 of you are so far ahead of the rest, you're basically guaranteed to win unless there's a secret last minute effort. You've made double the posts of 3 and 4. They, in turn have double the posts of 5 and 6. Sure, 7 and 8 may be challenging them (but honestly, I wouldn't have the time to get to 7 even if I wanted to), but basically this competition is already over. There's no need to do the kind of quick one-line replies we were all doing all yesterday. I know I had a flippant one line reply in my last post, but I hope that was taken as a joke based on the content.

My point is that you've already won. You don't have to spend all your life posting here. You can enjoy yourselves, pop in, chat for a bit as a real conversation, look at other threads or even sites too. Maybe you're doing all that already. Maybe I'm totally misreading the situation. But you guys don't need to worry about having to post just to increase numbers, especially as you already all have a tacit agreement about who's going to get what anyway.

I wish you all the very best. And, it's been nothing but a pleasure having you here. We love newer members joining in, but, we do hope that someday they also get the RackNerd cheer and spirit that most of us have come to love.

I did have that cheer and spirit once already at the start of my journey. That was 3 years ago now. My intentions were somewhat like:

However you take these comments, I wasn't trying to dismiss or downplay your contributions and the sense of friendship you have with. Just trying to get you to see the context of the thread a little differently.

Got it. Let me clarify a few more things here. None of us here are delusional about the intent of the thread. At the end of the day, RackNerd is a business. I have said this multiple times as well. This is an advertising tactic that more hosts should use, basically using your advertising budget on giveaways like these. In this way, a sense of the community being a part of the brand's journey is built. Moreover, it's a win-win-win for everyone involved.

As for the targets we set here from time to time, like let's reach 1000 together, it's just something we do to keep the hype up and maybe bring more people into the RackNerd cheer.

As for the winners already being set, you have to realise that I atleast personally don't leave it to chance and only believe it when I receive the DM from Dustin. And, as I said, posting here is kinds therapeutic for me. So, I do that not only with the intention of getting my count up, but, it works on other levels for me as well. The one-liners are my kinda reciprocation to the earlier comment, in majority of cases. I can engange in long convos, yes, I can, but, only when the other person is looking for that.

As for posting on other threads, well, again as I said, these trheads and familiar faces gives me a sense of familiarity, something I have been lacking IRL. So, I tend to make this my digital home. Again, it's something that no one else should decide for me. But, I do get your point. You do have good intentions when you ask me to explore LET more. But, believe me, I am happy here, most of the time. I do generally post on the other parts, very rarely and I am happy just doing that.

Man, these long messages are definitely improving my typing speeds. Wish Ben was here for a typing duel.

BTW @noob404 .. should we be worried about Dustin? He has been surprisingly absent as of late.. He was very active in the black friday thread. People seem to be waiting for a while on the bandwidth double as well these days. Do we know if he and his staff is safe from the fires?

Checking his profile - https://lowendtalk.com/profile/dustinc he was seen on LET today as well. Moreover, he has been active on the BF thread taking care of the double bw requests there. The BF thread is still receiving many more double bw requests than this thread. Moreover, looping through the comments here looking for double bw requests is tougher given our comments.
As for the fires, being a company with dc in la, I can't imagine the nightmare they might be passing through. So, I'd request everyone to be patient for a bit more. He will definitely be here

    True!!!

    Got work today?

Do you think it's possible racknerd delivers a 1GB 3/yr vps deal!?

True, I am overly optimistic on that one!

Racknerd offers a 1GB 0/yr vps deal! If we work hard enough and are lucky, it may even be free for 3 years.
