@ralf Hey, I haven't been digging and commenting on older posts, because of the unwritten rule or rather an understanding among some of us to not indulge in that. You know of it, cause we talked about it a few days ago.

But, I wanted to make myself clear this one last time. I do understand that you are a RackNerd customer as well. And, I do agree with some stuff you mentioned in your comment. I should get out more to the other threads, being one of them. I do peek out of this thread and generally look into the other threads. I do follow them, some of them being informative, for example, dev_vps has some pretty neat answers to queries here and there I stumbled upon. But, many threads here are too advanced for my understanding. So, when I do stumble upon them, I give them a read and generally thank them, but, refrain from engaging cause I have nothing to add, cause I am a noob. I do pose questions time and again when I can't find answers upon googling. And, members on LET have been really helpful. Moreover, I am an introvert online and offline, been like that since some years now. Trying to break that. So, I do have the bad habit of getting into a routine and getting really comfortable with it.

That being said, this (posting on an RN thread) is a routine I really enjoy. I also mentioned this in passing, on the Megathread, but, I foudn RackNerd at a very low point in my life. Spending time on the thread last year saved me from something unimaginable. I won't discuss the adverisities that I had to face, but, they were too much for me to face at the time, and the thread was a nice outlet. So, I have more reasons to thank RackNerd for, than you think and more than what I can explain in words.

As for the spam issue, it does exist. I am not gonna deny it. But, here a re a few things to note:-
    1. Compared to last year, this year, the thread is much more productive. Last year, I and Frank were involved in copy pasting facts and such. That's a well-recorded historical occurrence for the members of this thread. We did pay the price though, and since then, the thread's mostly productive.
    2. Comparing threads for spam, imo, is unfair, cause, it's highly subjective. For a person enjoying a thread with people he considers friends, throwing inside jokes all around, might be considered spam by a person just entering the thread. This is true for every thread with high participation. And, don't get me wrong. We love the Megathread. We respect and love FAT32 and emgh among others for all the awesome stuff they have got going for the community, even sacrificing their real life and jobs, at times. But, with the limited time, in our aily schedules + me being an introvert, I mostly spend my time here. Nothing against anyone or any thread. I love LET as a whole, how can I not, since thats' the only reason, I got to know about RackNerd and met such wonderful people.
    3. I have made it a habit to reciprocate in kind. If another person is having a serious convo, I won't interfere with silly jokes and such, or interfere, esp. after the unwritten rule, as I talked about in the beginning. But, if someone is just fooling around, I would join them as well. For example, me, TrK, xpress, Ben, etc. had many fruitful conversations on the BF thread. I got to learn a lot about servers and a lot of other stuff from them. We even discussed the philosophy of life and memories and such when FAT32 joined us briefly during BF.

And, from your words, I can concur that you seem to think I have this unhealthy obsession with RackNerd. But, believe me, I don't (for the most part). I know there are cheaper deals to be had, if I would look past these few threads. But, this is a person's own preference. I love RackNerd for their deals and like many others here, would like to stick with them for the foreseeable future.

I am not sure how much of that you are able to relate to, but, that's most of what I have to say about my participation on these threads. I hope you understand. Even if you can't relate, I hope you will respect my right to choose.

I wish you all the very best. And, it's been nothing but a pleasure having you here. We love newer members joining in, but, we do hope that someday they also get the RackNerd cheer and spirit that most of us have come to love.

Noob.. I am proud that you have used so many characters in your post <3

Lol. Just wanted to make my opinions clear.

It was all Ralf this time. He told me he wants to snipe the telly (in my dreams)

Lol. It's an uphill battle, but, everyone needs to be on the lookout

What do y'all think of WordPress?

I'm not a fan because people using it don't patch their WP plugins and then they whine when they get hacked

Then blame it on WP too!

vanilla wordpress instances are kept up-to-date moreso then ones with plugins on them

I installed nginx on my alpine racknerd vps

    nice! alpine ftw!

What do you have hosted on Alpine?

Nextcloud, static sites with nginx, gitea

nice. those all work out pretty well on alpine?

Yeah, they work out well on Alpine. Also, the official way to run gitea is in docker and they use Alpine in their docker images.

If you havent yet, reminder to enter the racknerd winter gleam give away!

    https://lowendbox.com/blog/racknerd-winter/

I finally remembered today without a reminder

    I so hate gleam

    Why?

becuase it is just harvesting tons of data from people

Yep, giveaway may be free as far as $$$ goes, but you pay with data. Such is the way of the Internet in present times.

It doesn't need to be that way, but too many people just submit to this BS which is why it keeps continueing. It's like domestic abuse, you need to stop enabling your abuser to stop the abuse.

Yeah its always associated with really shady give aways too when i usually see it. atleast in this case its racknerd but i dont know whats happening between my entry and when it ends up delievered to rack nerd

exactly, we have no clue on what data is being sent to where

    Only 19 pages remaining

Yup, not a huge target for the RackNerd gang. Let's go

Simply blink your eyes, and seven new pages will unfold.😛

it's all magic with those internet tube thingers

I have to admit, autocorrect has definitely gotten worse.

Yeah i dont know why. It was awesome on my pixel. Its horrible on my samsung. Same with voice to text and swipe to text. Not sure if its android, or the vendor.

    could be the vendor

isnt wordpress pretty much built on plguins though? Like if you want any sort of "decent" features you need to start tacking on plguins? I still have never tried it

  • @chitree said:

I didnt know that.. this thread was the first i ever heard of alpine and i had also only recently learned of gitea. I was a little worried alpine was "experimental" or in some sort of early adopter phase however seening that some pretty large projects use it is a good sign to me. I need to start investigating alpine some more

  • @chitree said:

True.. In this case maybe we should petition dustin to use something that is not gleam. Im not sure he really needs the data so much as just wants the exposure? The cheat protection is probably good, but look at this thread for example. He doesnt get must data from the threads and is happy to hand out prizes all the time

  • @chitree said:

exactly, we have no clue on what data is being sent to where

So my question is i guess.. why isnt there any sort of open source alternative? I guess the problem with that is you need to spin up the record keeping service and cheat protection as well which would require you to host in on a server somewhere... Would be nice if maybe someone just made an alternative to gleam too. It could even be something like not collecting data and just having advertisers or something. Like you cant do your daily unless you listen to a 30 second ad or something

  • i forgot all about this show.. i really need to re-watch this as an adult. I heard a similar show, animaniacs was really geared to adult humor as well but just over the heads of children

it's all magic with those internet tube thingers

Im trying to decipher this one and struggling.. what are the internet tube thingers? Do you mean the youtubers? This was in reference to us getting to page 800(?) or something like that. This one is really taking my mind for a loop, others have been more straight forward

  • @chitree said:

thats my thought as well but im surprised samsung would put something out that performed so poorly... Maybe they are less focused on the supplementary apps though than they are getting the hardware out there. I should look into if i can put the pure google keyboard and voice to text back on my phone

  • @chitree said:

vim, why is this even a question?

nano is nice... Its just hard for me when you get over a single file that you want to edit. It also helps that its included by default in so many distributions. I used to use nano all the time and thought i was a leet haxor back in the day. Then eventually i started using vim and realized i know almsot nothing. That was many many moons ago though

  • @chitree said:

    then there's also neovim

I'll have to check that one out.. on most of my vps i stick with vi as its typically included. My primary machine though as vim which is what i like the most. I dont really notice what vi is missing from vim until i try to do something thats not there.. I cant think of something off the top of my head at the moment that i am missing out on using vi rather than vim.

I remember this post! This is like a bittersweet memory. Like.. history is coming back to the present again. I remember how I was just a young racknerder back then.. how the times have changed. I dont like this, i didnt expect to get so sentimenal about the past. It feels like we have all been here together for months already and at some point the bond will simply be broken and cast to dust when this thread ultimately closes at the end of it all :(

That is quite ambitious, if we just tag around on the hype train chi is creating that could happen
