We will. There's no doubt about it. The record this year will be broken only next year.

True! And when we break it next year, it’ll be even more epic! :D

Does make it harder on the participants though. The pressure to break records  But with mor people joining in, easy peasy

I'll be honest, normally racknerd threads are terrible because they are just full of spammy hashtags to win giveaways, but at least lots of people are involved. This thread... it's just a bit of a shame that apart from the top 5 or so people, everybody else has lost interest.

Look at the prizes and look at the stats - the top 25 posters get some kind of prize, and the 25th place is held by someone with 22 posts.

This is probably actually the worst engagement on a racknerd thread i've ever seen. It's great that you guys are making your own fun and targets, but it's pretty disgusting how little dustin has been here to engage with you. I've joked about the sweater, but it's actually shocking. Normally he'd be on at least half the pages doubling bandwidth and chatting a bit. It really seems like this BF, Christmas and NY he's done literally the bare minimum.

    </take-off-serious-hat>

Noted. I agree with your observation that yes, we make our own fun. Yes, we are all here to hype it upa nd win giveaways and extremely expensive items. For some of us these are items that could take years of savings before we can own them.

That's all anyone on LET sees most of the time. But, remember, most of us are also loyal customers of RackNerd for good reasons (awesome prices, quick support, Dustin). So, while RackNerd does all of this for us, by giving always expensive items, we feel an obligation to give back to the host we love, by any means possible. And this is our way of giving back, by keeping the thread active and on the top.

While we do hope for giveaways, we also understand that Dustin is just another human being who is the CEO of our favourite company that's going through one of the busiest times of the year. In other terms, we also have selfless reasons to be here.

I don't expect you to understand why we don't get frustrated when we don't see Dustin here everyday. But, if you did read through the above, I believe, you might have gotten a lil bit of idea. If still nothing, I guess you will never get the RackNerd spirit. And, I am not gonna explain this again, for obvious reasons and plus, my hands hurt typing on the phone.

No, I get it. I've had a racknerd server for years and had 3 or 4 at one point. And it's what got me into this forum.

I've said it before, Dustin is a fantastic salesman and he knows exactly how to press people's buttons to get them to buy, get others to see they've bought, get people excited about getting something for free after they've bought, and then afterwards usually engaging with the community. I get that. I got sucked in with a $11/y deal on 11/11 some years ago, and felt great about the purchase because he doubled the bandwidth that I was never going to use anyway. I felt so good about it that the next day I bought a 2 core somewhere else which I eventually got rid of, etc.

I also get the brand loyalty thing, but really it's just one of many providers. Objectively, they're good value for the very lowest end of the VPS segment, but honestly while these machines are cheap, they're not great. The CPUs were slow 5 years ago, and they're really slow now! I still keep my 1 core racknerd around because I don't need speed on it, as all it does it run DNS and a backup mail server in case my main mail server is down, so it doesn't need to be powerful. But for comparison, it scores about half on geekbench compared to my next slowest VPS. What's good about them is that they're generally reliable, I've had almost no downtime in nearly 3 years (when there was a 1.5 day on-off issue with networking in LAX), and support is really good.

But there's definitely more to see here than just in this thread. If you hang out in the megathreads, most years there are loads of deals to be had that are even cheaper and for better specs. This year was a bit weird as there weren't many deals, but instead there were non-stop giveaways. I actually felt a bit giveaway'd out because I just wanted to buy a $7/y deal rather than get one free because then I'll feel like it was MINE but just a handout! In the other threads, you'll find loads of conversation about all sorts of things in additional to deals in the megathreads, but what's really interesting is that happens without any of this spam mentality. This year the main megathread had far more posts than the RN threads, which is unusual, but was solely because Dustin wasn't around to engage with you guys. But if you look at the megathreads, apart from a few moments of silliness like the rats, there wasn't any spam, because people hate reading it and it kills off the conversation. There was just a lot of conversation, and a lot of people joining in and having fun. That's what a real community is about, not just spamming for the sake of it.

I know you guys are having fun, and understand the prizes are a big deal to some of you based on where you're from, and I get that - you should try to win them, but also be mindful of the fact that there's more to life than this! You're honestly also so far ahead of everyone else that you'd notice if anyone actually had a close of catching up and then you could double down a bit. (Hopefully I don't say that and then you lose out on the prize you want, because then I'd feel bad). Whether you get to 900 pages, 1000 pages, 1500 pages or 2000 pages, without any engagement from Dustin, it's all just posting for the sake of it. Have a rest. Browse the rest of the forum. Go outside and see the sun. You'll still be 1st / 2nd / whatever afterwards.

Anyway. Just felt like I had to share a bit... Do whatever makes you happy. But IMHO even brand loyalty to the most top-tier brand in the world won't do that, so it's definitely not worth defining your entire identity here in terms of any brand.

Yeah, I actually got my first PS3 in Hong Kong, with 5 games, and extra controller, HD video cable and brought it back to the UK. Total price of all of that was still 10% less than the UK launch price of just the console. So, at least I didn't overpay for it!

Can we get a tl;dr for this one?

Stop chasing "reaching page whatever" and go and enjoy life instead.

Raf, if you wanted to gofor one item in the main prize pool, what'd it be?

which is the most expensive again? how many sweaters is it worth?

Obviously the laptop, $850. Not sure of how many sweaters thiugh

PS5 is worth more than $850 tho?

    Not the digital edition

yeah, needs a slot to put in my disk

Yah. You need to get either OG PS5, PS5 Pro or PS5 slim for that, if I am not wrong.

i stick with my phat ps3s

    Aren't why known for overheating?

not in the uk where it's cold all the time

Guess those Phats were made for the temperate region the. Where they could double up as room heaters

Memes were made of people making omelettes.

Yeah, there's another one with eggs iirc but this one was first, about 2 days after the ps3 launched this picture appeared

Oh those were crazy times..people were buying them for 10x the price from scalpers.

Yeah, I actually got my first PS3 in Hong Kong, with 5 games, and extra controller, HD video cable and brought it back to the UK. Total price of all of that was still 10% less than the UK launch price of just the console. So, at least I didn't overpay for it!

If you factor in the flight hotel, food etc over there, did you still come out on top? Now im thinking about doing this to acquire a telly

Not if you count all of that, but I was travelling somewhere else via HK and spending a couple of days there anyway, so all that would have been the same cost whether I bought the PS3 or not.

Im starting to get worried that @noob404 is going to suprass me then push me into number 2. At that point, i have lower hopes one more person will pass me and i'll be stuck with a playstation. xD

I also hope TrK or xpress (or whever else gets #3) would still be willing to trade telly for whatever prize i end up with assuming they can take delievery of whatever prize i end up with

Aww, they wouldn't do that! And you have well over double the comments of the guy in 4th. He's unlikely to catch up, even if you stopped all posting now!

    </take-off-serious-hat>
