Personally never used WP Engine. What value did they offer that WordPress alone didn't?

    No Matt.

WPengine is Matt-Mullen[whatever his name is] free. And I guess they also offer some other advantages or else nobody would buy their product/service.

Oh yah. Sorry, I didn't get it first. I am guessing all they provide as part of their "managed" or "WP optimsied" hosting is something you can set up on your own, except a CDN maybe, if they do provide that.

Sorry, me not know details. But certainly there are users here who know the WP universe much, much better than I do.

Seems neat. Have you been using it for a long time ? Is it stable / a good long term choice ? Thanks!

I think @vyas11 has tried it out for a while.

Thanks for the tag, yes, ClassicPress works as described.. but with limitations. Earlier this year I had set up a Fan Site for ClassicPress- installation methods, plugins, themes etc Ihave tried..

    friendly folk at ClassicPress community..

  • Even after reading connects I don't understand

Isn't Wordpress free and open source? How can sunshine be banned from using it?

Maybe Local? Otherwise, nothing much. They acquired several commercially successful plugins, like ACF Advanced Custom Fields and kept free versions.

ClassicPress does seem like a pretty good option for those looking for something lighter/simpler than WP.

  • Update from 9th Jan 2025

Automattic will reduce its contributions to WordPress to 45 hours a week, focus on for-profit projects within Automattic instead: WordPress.com, Pressable, WPVIP, Jetpack, and WooCommerce

    It's so petty

Additionally, we’re having to spend significant time and money to defend ourselves against the legal attacks started by WP Engine

    ...that they started?

As part of this reset, Automattic will match its volunteering pledge with those made by WP Engine and other players in the ecosystem, or about 45 hours a week

It seems like such a childish response overall.

  • Matt is continuing his petty tantrums by kicking out folks who openly disagree with him https://wordpress.org/news/2025/01/jkpress/

To make this easy and hopefully give this project the push it needs to get off the ground, I’m deactivating the .org accounts of Joost, Karim, Se Reed, Heather Burns, and Morten Rand-Hendriksen. I strongly encourage anyone who wants to try different leadership models or align with WP Engine to join up with their new effort

  • IDK where the WordPress .org is heading.

Ninety minutes later, Mullenweg joined the #sustainability channel, and 4 minutes later, he announced he was shutting down the team.

“Today I learned that we have a sustainability team,” Mullenweg said.

“Thank you Thijs Buijs for your effort in this area, looking at results of the team so far, and the ROI of time invested, it’s probably a good time to officially dissolve the team entirely.”

  • LOL

The lawsuits will go years and could potentially bankrupt me or force the closure of http://WordPress.org. It also takes a huge amount of time — there is no “lawyers work on that.”

  • An update if someone is still interested:

Automattic will match its volunteering pledge with those made by WP Engine and other players in the ecosystem, or about 45 hours a week that qualify under the Five For the Future program as benefitting the entire community and not just a single company. These hours will likely go towards security and critical updates.

    https://automattic.com/2025/01/09/aligning-automattics-sponsored-contributions-to-wordpress/

Their previous estimate was "3915 hours a week" — https://wordpress.org/news/2024/09/wp-engine/
