We're not saying you should price deals lower than you can afford or that cause you to make a loss. It's entirely your choice as a provider.
Some providers look at the potential future benefits in terms of exposure, brand recognition and potential recommendations when deciding to sell limited numbers of services at below cost or at almost no profit. It's not for everyone, as the pay off might take a year or two, but it absolutely can. There's also the risk that if people aren't happy with the service, no matter what it costs, they'll complain about it and you can do your brand harm too. I can think of at least 2 examples that were popular in previous years that have fallen out of favour this year because the services wasn't up to standard.
Whether you should do that is a commercial decision for you, not as a comparison to what other providers are doing. But there have been plenty that have done one-off small quantity massive discounts, and that can work really well for them and for us.
Just personally, despite winning some giveaways, I've also bought from 4 other providers offering incredibly cheap deals ($12/yr or below) that I would never have tried otherwise. One of them has turned out to be within 10% of my fastest existing VPS, and it's likely I'll be buying more from several of these providers in the future at their regular prices, both from the giveaways and the cheap deals.
Just to re-iterate, I'm not suggesting YOU offer such deals, but they definitely are there.
