  Well it might not be true avif. They might use the extension .avif but depending on the Accept HTTP header they serve different / fallback format like .gif

  We are still experimenting with .avif file format at work because of the compatibility issue so I don't know too much yet.

  i'm 90% they would save as a gif in my phone if they did though, but they're saving as AVIFs

  plus it would be some fucking hacky work to get a website on an iphone to show you a gif when it recognizes no AVIF support but then still have you download the AVIF when selecting a gif.
