Is that normal with showing inaccurate location?

GPoeGPoe Member
edited January 2025 in Help

I bought a SG VPS from RO based provider. But Facebook and Google are recognizing my location as from RO.
Is that normal?
I just need to be actual SG location on web.
Should I need to stop my VPS subscription from that provider?

Thanks and Happy New Year, bros.

  • A provider cannot guarantee a specific geolocation for their IP address, since it differs for each GeoIP provider, etc. You could open up a ticket with them, but most likely nothing much they can do. Why do you need a specific IP from SG for facebook though?

  • Yes it's normal for geolocation to be crap.

At best Geo-IP is junk science.

Without more data, they default to the center or captal city of the country the company is registered to.

If you are actually using it on an Android phone after a bit of time the applications you use that track and report your location will update the various databases for you.

  • All too normal. Ping and Traceroute are your real friends.

  • Yes it is normal except if you bought from @0WebHost.

  • Nope. They are resellers and bring local IPs because they cheaper than original.

  • you can check using bgp.he.net and see where they had presence and connected (peer) with another internet provider. sometime it also listed which IX it connected to.

Facebook & Google let easily login, sent codes for my accounts if my location is SG.

Most of apps and webs are working properly only by VPN.
e.g Facebook is banned, MediaFire is banned by all Major ISP. Viber messages are not in nor out with VPN.

If I use EU location, Facebook suspects my activity, even disable my accounts.

    That's why.

If you need an original IP address it is better to buy from those who are in the region.

My provider may be reseller of M247 SLR EU, he said No, just partnership with them.

Sometimes it’s a real pain to get GeoIP Database Operators to update locations of ranges.

If you want correct and working geolocation, get Amazon EC2 or Lightsail. I have a Singaporean Lightsail Instance and it geolocates correctly.

Just from curiosity, which is that provider?

  • Detecting IP quality
Whether the IP belongs to the server room or the residence
Whether the IP is broadcast or local.
Obviously, your IP is registered in Romania.
It is still a broadcast IP, broadcasting to Singapore.

Yes, it's painful. Sometimes, Google don't let me login and ask several steps, delayed my work flow.

According to geo-IP my basement and main floor are 3000km apart, the IPs are in the same /28.

"according to geo-ip" is vague. Which database are you querying? IPInfo.io is usually quite accurate, Maxmind too for ISPs

Honestly, not sure, just used a web search.

These two IPs show the same location in each database but,

IPInfo.io shows a location 2000km away in a different country.

Maxmind shows a location 3000km away with a radius of 1000km, but at least it has the correct country.

I really don't care, the only thing that shows an issue is Netflix sometimes that 'detects' account sharing.
