On the gui front, I have used a lighter weight gui in the past before for x11, think it was Xfce but i do my best to avoid any of that business

ope i should clarify. Its more for launching gui based apps. you wont get a full dsktop based env. Thats usually all i need it for. I'd have to defer to bing, i havent used it in a while
