man i am setting up a DB server on a lsw vps1 seems fine for now let's see how it unfolds :)

    MariaDB?

A single server for mariadb + postgres, with couple of DBs ranging from 400mb to 1gig

You already have that much of data? existing project?

yeah have to move around bunch of stuff and fix some issues with nginx fastcgi

Postgres seems much more lightweight than PHPMyAdmin. Gotta try it out someday.

postgrest and mariadb both are different, my use case mostly goes with mariadb postgres for some js stuff where i don't need that much of data unlike mariadb.

Oh, I used to think Postgres was a PHPMyadmin alternative. Isn't it a client rather than a server?

yeah postgresql it's a db server

    Didn't know this. Thank you.

always happy to help, there are other db servers as well, typically monogodb and postgres are more flexible than mariadb and can scale better for me mariadb is serving just too much of my infra.... don't have time or patience to migrate everything over.

Me as well. Moved to MariaDB a few years ago from MySQL. Stayed with it, cause it serves my purposes well, and is slightly faster than MySQL in some cases. Will have to try Postgres one of these days.

you will instantly notice the difference specially since postgres supports much more indexing types than mariadb and of course the scalability....

Yup. I am also planning to use it for the shop plan I told you before.

sounds like a plan, i would also suggest leveraging redis or something better for in memory caching, you get better response times.

    I use redis.

good to know, any other recommendations? i am currently looking at dragonfly....

Haven't try the others. Redis the goto for my laravel apps

great, i also use memcached for some projects and it also works great....

would you say memcached is better than redis? Any reason to use one over the other?

Where's everybody. let's bring the RackNerd Christmas spirit to the thread now!!

Everyone celebrating the festival I think.

Makes sense. Got any plans for Christmas?

    No plans. Working currently. :(

BTW, whatever happened of your Jellyfin plans. Had the time to try it yet?

Not yet. Those are for NewYear, i will start working on it after 31st.

Oh ok. Ping me if you face any issues.

Sure. Are you using it currently?

Yup. On my Android box. But, planning to get an SSD for it soon.

SSD will definitely improve the experience. Can your android box handle the streaming

Oh yes, for that, I use their official clients, which disables transcoding on the Android box. If I do transcode, it's always 100% CPU usage on the Box with constant buffering.

Ok, so transcoding may not work with the 2 core setup then. They have Android client as well?

Oh yes, they got official and some unofficial forks with added features, for virtually every OS. here it is https://jellyfin.org/downloads/

Just realised, they even got one for WebOS. So, if you got a recent LG TV, you are set there as well.

Nah.. my tv is old VU non smart. Have firestick though.

fire tv is rock solid i have a spare one just in case......

You definitely need the spare remote. :D

    4k one?

not the 4k one but i didn't had 4k tv when i bought it so just rolled with any i could afford for cheap.

I got the 3rd gen one. With some Timesprime coupon at Rs. 199 :p

you got really great value for the 200 you paid i am envious

If I tell you what more I've got like PureIt UV RO purifier at 699, logitech kbs at 199, 2TB HDD at 499, and many more.. you'll feel more envious.. :p

$499 for a 2TB hDD seems very expensive sir!

Just checked, the expected price for GTA 6 in India is around Rs. 6000!! That's a hell lot. But, I guess, the game justifies it.

What 6k? No i will definitely not spend that much on games.

Me as well. Coming from a generation of kids that used to have fun with Champak Jogo Discs, 5k for a game is unimaginable for me.

I have a big collection of PC games from EPIC games though. Btw, sale is running there. And free mystery game daily in this holidays.

Thanks for reminding to redeem todays freebie! I really should just automate that.

@Beniskickbutt said: would you say memcached is better than redis? Any reason to use one over the other?

Whether Memcached is better than Redis depends on the specific use case and requirements of your application. Here are some key differences and considerations for choosing one over the other:
    Memcached:

Simplicity: Memcached is simpler and easier to set up. It is primarily a caching solution and is designed for speed.
Memory Management: It uses a simple key-value store and is optimized for storing small chunks of data (strings).
Eviction Policy: Memcached uses a least-recently-used (LRU) eviction policy, which can be beneficial for caching scenarios where you want to keep the most frequently accessed data.
Multi-threaded: Memcached can handle multiple threads, which can lead to better performance in multi-core systems.

    Redis:

Data Structures: Redis supports a variety of data structures (strings, hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, etc.), making it more versatile for different use cases beyond simple caching.
Persistence: Redis offers options for data persistence (RDB snapshots and AOF logs), allowing you to save data to disk and recover it after a restart.
Advanced Features: Redis includes features like pub/sub messaging, transactions, Lua scripting, and more, which can be useful for complex applications.
Replication and Clustering: Redis supports master-slave replication and clustering, which can enhance availability and scalability.

    When to Use Each:

Use Memcached if you need a simple, high-performance caching layer for small key-value pairs and do not require advanced features or data persistence.
Use Redis if you need more complex data structures, persistence, or advanced features like pub/sub, transactions, or clustering.

In summary, if your application requires advanced data handling and persistence, Redis is likely the better choice. If you need a straightforward caching solution, Memcached may be sufficient.

Today, had another great support experience, courtesy of the RackNerd customer support team. I don't know if they have an internal mechanism to monitor response times, but, I am still amazed by their quick response times. And, it makes me wonder why those big corporations with all that money, charging 4x prices than RackNerd can't provide quick support. Gonna stick with RackNerd for life now !

May be RackNerd have their own support AI :p

True, support is the main thing most companies fail to deliver.

Hi @xpress7 -- No AI within our support :) Just a passionate team that understands the importance of quick, helpful support, and truly cares for our customers' needs as if it were their own. I actually talked more about this in an interview on LowEndBox here: https://lowendbox.com/blog/interview-with-racknerd-ceo-dustin-cisneros-the-importance-of-human-interaction-in-customer-service/

I agree with you though, support is indeed where many companies fall short. It's why we've invested heavily in building a solid team that can deliver consistent response times. This has helped us maintain our reputation in the industry :)

Was joking about AI. Almost all of the members here vouch for the RackNerd support. It is premium. B)

RackNerd support is almost TOO good, they have blown my mind with response times and ticket resolution since day one!

yeah its out of this world. Nothing else compares. I often think about how well racknerd handles it even compared to problems in other domains
