If you buy one, get the heatsink fan/case that Radxa sell, it's almost unusable without it

Yeah, I'd heard that. do the production ones actually make contact with the chip? The preview ones didn't. I'm hoping to be able to run HomeAssistant and Openwebrx on it.

They provide a thermal pad with it that bridges that gap when installed

In fact, there are also Banana Pi and Mango Pi, but they are not as famous as Raspberry Pi and Orange Pi.

Yeah, all the other fruits jumping on the bandwagon. I've not tried any, but they are easily available (which sounds like a minor thing until you actually try to buy an rpi) and seem to be better value for money on features, but I get the impression that they are churned out with a single working image and then people left to fend for themselves.

Oh, and unless things have changed, in the arm world every device has a different device tree and different ways of accessing it, so you need a distro specially built for your device even though really only the bootloader and kernel differ.

you are correct, there is armbian images for about 90% of SBC's but only around 20% of them i would consider production ready

Raspbian (basically Debian) is still supported for my old rpi 3b+.

I also have a FriendlyElec NanoPi Neo. I guess it was old already when I got it. Initially, it had an official Armbian build, which was good. But they dropped it awhile back, and I had serious issues when it went to community builds. So it's frozen on an old official kernel, now.

Even if Raspberry Pi is overpriced, I have greater confidence that they will remain supported.
