I do a lot of router mods, let me know if you ever need assistance.

I need some advice on OpenWrt on my Netgear 7500v1

Ooooh, HMU on Discord and I got you. I can't maintain a proper conversation on that topic here with all the noise.

Go go go no openwrt for xpress

Ha ha. Already installed and running it. Just need some suggested config..

    Install transmission and do torrent

Had it on NAS. Removed after one drive died. Always felt the Transmission was the reason for my drive failrue in the wdcloud.

I doubt it was due to transmission, can be something else entirely hard to figure out....

Entirely possible depending on the amount of torrents running, they're extremely heavy in I/O operations. This is made worse by running it on a SOHO router.

Sad then. I killed my drive and data with my own hands. :(

Is the drive actually dead? Or just the controller in the USB enclosure?

Well, SMART showed errors, and then WD clodu showed drive error. And also if I put it in NAS bay, it is making some weird noises.

I removed it and runninig with only 1 drive now.

This most probably means an issue with the little hand like things that actually read the data on the platter. Sometimes, replacing them fix the issue, at other times, you might actually have to replace the BIOS chip and write the old data to this one.

Any tutorials or vids available abou this?

Opening the drive to replace the head without a professional clean room is never advised unless it is for data recovery before retiring the drive. An issue with the drive controller board, while rare, is possible, but rather tricky as well as you need an exact match replacement. Being able to dump the nand from the original board and writing it to the replacement is almost always required unless you get lucky.

These are all data recovery methods, not "keep the drive working for further use" methods.

If the drive itself outside of the enclosure, put in a PC, yeilds no access to data, then the above methods might be necessary. Is it readable at all? If not and it's making noises the heads may be stuck to the platters. A firm slap to the side of the drive while powered down can sometimes free it up, but I have had to open them up to unstick it. At that point it's a race to dump what data you can, and then the drive is done.

All depends on if it works at all, if you have already stated this, I missed it my bad. :p

  • Just to re-iterate, more information on the exact drive condition and state of function is required before I can safely recommend anything. :)

Yah, I believe I had a similar setup. Only that they decided to get me Win 98 with it, not even XP.

Why 98? I got it with XP. I used to format the system everymonth and reinstall the OS, to increase the PERFORMANCE.. 🤣🤣

Yah, remember the time, we used to measure a PC's performance based on the number of times the XP loading bar moved before desktop loaded?

Oh yeah. I spent most of the time tuning the PC than using it. Funny days.. :p

Remember the application - SpeedumyPC and bviously, RAM Downloader?!!

Ha ha I remembered them all. And the flashy gif ads on websites with Download Ram ...

Missing downloading more RAM now. 🤣🤣

LOL! How many times have we been fooled by that.

Ha ha. Somehow I never fell for that though. I was mad for PCs at that time and read a lot about them. I've been reading about computers since 98 iirc, even though I don't have a computer. I love computers.

Not for the RAM Downloader. Oh no, never fell for that. But, I did fall for SpeedupmyPC.

    Those are sweet memories.

The only thing Windows still keeping from those days is the BSOD.

 And, the thing is they did virtually nothing to fix those BSODs. Instead what'd they do? Redesigned the BSOD page.

atleast its not the same BSOD anymore!

LOL! Youa re right. The new design makes it look less threatening and scary

BSOD is light heart attack anyway..

Oh yeah, especially when you have something important going on.

They happen only when we have important work.

Oh yes. Interestingly, similar amount of work doesn't cause a kernel panic on Linux.

    Linux kernel is solid..

Wish Windows learned something from Linux.

it did, WSL wasn't born from capitalistic mindsets
