Our staff's about to head off for the night, but I give @FAT32 permission to host an auction of a single 6/6/66, at his discretion, at any time he pleases, for any minimum increment he desires. Merry happy... whatever

I can't stand the cold. It's like 5c here now and I'm like, freezing

Me too. I was on holiday in Taiwan for just over 3 weeks in early November, and it was mid 20s and lovely. Went to HK for a couple of days on the way home and it was 19. Felt cold, even wore a long sleeve thick T-shirt while climbing up a mountain in the early afternoon heat.

And then I came back to the UK. The first 2 weeks I was back, it didn't get above 4 degrees. There was a brief period of 9 or 10 degrees, and now it's back around 5 again.

I've barely been outside this last month apart from to go shopping, compared to walking over 500km in the previous 4 weeks.

Oh BTW, how is Taiwan/ HK? Never visited it. Any fun places to visit?

It's really nice, but the weather is kind of weird. The south is significantly warmer (well a few degrees) than the north, but the north seemed to be on the verge of raining most of the time but mostly staying dry in Taipei, but a bit further north in Keelung (maybe 100km away and more east than north) it was raining the entire 4 days I was there. I'd just missed a massive Typhoon a couple of days before I arrived, and lots of places when I went walking near Taipei had loads of trees that had been cleared from the paths, but the woods next to the paths were filled with loads of remains of fallen trees. So, I was a bit worried that there were another 2 typhoon warnings in the next 3 weeks, but neither came close in the end. But I didn't realise they were such a big deal there.

I didn't get to visit some of the most famous of the beautiful natural places like Taroko National Park (still closed after last year's earthquake destroyed most of the transport links, but apparently opening sometime next year), but the places I did see were amazing. Cycling around Sun Moon Lake was probably my highlight, but there were loads of places and a lot very accessible from the big cities too.

Culturally there are a LOT of temples. Like more temples than you could conceive of as being required. In some districts, every few streets you'll find a cluster of little mini temples and maybe a really large and really impressive temple that towers above the rest. The food is amazing - has most of the usual Chinese favourites, a LOT of Japanese fast food places - it's almost easier to get a plate of Katsu curry than a bowl of fried rice, and some really amazing street food at the night markets. Most of the big cities will have 3 or 4 famous night markets, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if there weren't many more too.

All in all an absolutely amazing place. I'm planning to go back again maybe March or April hopefully missing the end of the rainy season and before the mega hot summer.

Wow, thank you for the detailed write up. I was expecting the weather to be much colder at this time of the year.

I have heard typhoons are a big deal there and you gotta be ready at all times especially during peak.

You are writing exactly how I would love my vacation... mix of culture, food, nightlife, urban and nature mix.
But alas, I am not sure if I can do 3 weeks. I have usually started seeing myself home sick after a week or 10 days max. But who knows, right weather and place may do the trick
    (you said 3 weeks right?)

How did you manage the lodging and transportation?

I only tell you the "legendary" ones.

This one didn't make that list because it didn't come with an IPv4

  • @plumberg said: How did you manage the lodging and transportation?

Just regular hotels - I booked everything using the trip.com because I'm already in the top tier for discounts from using it a lot in China. Prices are more than China, but still pretty reasonable - I was paying around $30-$60 per night, always got a double room and most had a lot of space.

The trains are pretty cheap and reliable, and there are some fast ones on the West Coast that are about 3x faster than the normal ones for about 50% more money. In cities, Taipei had a really good MRT (subway) system, Taizhong had I think 2 lines and Gaoxiong had maybe 1 subway and a light rail. Outside of Taipei, busses are the primary form of public transport, although they can be quite crap on some routes, so I used the hop-on hop-off public bikes quite a lot. You have to pre-register you pre-paid travel card thing (like a HK Octopus card if you've used that) for the bikes, and then it's about $0.30 per 30 minutes. The pre-paid card is great. There are a couple of competing brands, but you can use them all on all the busses and MRT, some local trains with unreserved seating too, and also in shops, but as you can only reload them with cash, there's not much point doing that.

Is that "holding people back from using IPv6" or "protecting users from the horrors of IPv6"?
