First time? Had this once, they made me rush something, testing environment was down too.
I warned them, they didn't care, we even had to disable the safeties that would prevent that from happening, despite it showing 2 different error messages, they just ignored it.

Usually at this point, the script would abort, but we disabled the safeties by request.....

2 weeks later, he chatted with me like, "Hey, A bunch of costumers complained, that the stuff they submitted weeks ago, wasn't transmitted at all, the insurer haven't gotten anything.

I checked the code, was ups, apparently we still had the testing environment configured.
We had a policy, that any commit that is merged, had to be checked by the team lead, apparently he didn't noticed that too.

This guy then, raged against me the entire day, I had to block this guy, to resume my work.
Of course he complained to my boss, but he didn't care.

    hahahahaha what a shitfest

Actually, the amount of billoh bucks paid by the providers in this thread is more can Racknerd, the math is not mathing.

    Bwhahahahaha

I screwed up once on my first paid position.. actually twice.

    • learned the power of save button when I lost a 5000 line procedure that was written on the server and one day electrical fluctuations or something happened and power was lost for a brief moment across. Since then, ctrl + s comes naturally to me

    • Ok, same procedure. Fine tuning it for client to generate quarterly statements. Working through edge cases and enhanced the proc. Towards the ebd i figured iut it is just these 10/15 edge cases were chqllwnging so ended up with a filter that would execute the proc against these... by hardcoding these... you know where this is going........

Did full test, all worked, committed my code to vss with the edge cases hardcoded... manager blindly approved it

And for 10 days all seemed fine. 11th day client is saying why are only a handful reports generated?

Fortunately I was a good guy and owed up and client was chill with that as I had managed to fine tune their reports with edge case fixes which were problems before...

Ok, all done, not as exciting, but just thought to share it.

I think that's probably the end... nothing big but we have been dragging this longer than it should, the thread will set to sink in the next ~80 minutes. If any providers still have anything final please do it now, thanks everyone for the fun!

We still have 1 active giveaway and you can still comment in this thread but probably there will be less and less interaction, stay tuned for the next megathread!

Well usually it is not my fault but it is this time, it is a very simple change but then because it is one of the main core logic there's environment difference that could lead to undefined behaviour. Both automated and manual tests unable to catch it because such environment is not in our scope.

Not the biggest incident I have caused but still feels bad that I overlooked on this small issue.

Getting up on Monday is already a bad start!

  • The most based thread of 2024 is forever below the fold.

Simple change, that's what she said.
Even the senior dev's, didn't had the balls to touch the base code.

One change, could fuck up so many things.

  • I dare @FAT32 to sink the purple thread too since it has been dragging longer than it should.

This is my last comment for this lifetimethread.
