Looking for 2 core high speed vps mostly idle in US

bobertbobert Member
edited December 2024 in Requests

This will be for compiling code and testing a real time app for issues. It will be idle 99% of the time, but occasionally use 100% cpu.

Looking for best value for cpu speeds.

Minimum requirements

cores: 2
ram: 2gb
hd: 50gb ssd
cpu steal: <2%
bandwidth: 100 mbit 1tb/month
uptime: don't need 99.9% but nothing too terrible
location: US I am fine with budget locations like las vegas, utah, oregon, phoenix, denver etc... Prefer west coast and Texas. Might take east coast if it's much better value wise.

Hosts I considered:

crunchbits: 900 geekbench
contabo: was 1500 geekbench but then after an upgrade, it dropped to 1100
clouvider: only slow cpus on the west coast
oplink: currently considering but 2 core plan will be the most expensive out of the options
advin servers: closest fast cpu plan only in KC where I get the same ping as an east coast location.

It would be a Xeon Gold 6152, happy to get you a trial, if you would like to test it out.

  • hmm ok thanks. I'd prefer a faster single core as my app is mostly single threaded on startup. but I will consider it as one of my options

you totally suit below-ish plan, sadly the BF sales are slowing down, almost ending. could still try your luck though.

  • Have you looked at cloud providers with hourly billing and API? You could write a script to provision a high performance compute unit, install dependencies, or better yet, build your own OS image to provision with, compile and run your code, save the logs in s3 compatible storage and then delete the server.
Might be cheaper than renting a VPS

I thought about this but if I'm only paying $5-8 a monthly, I'd rather not wait 20 minutes for the server to spin up whenever I need to compile/test. I have like 40 gb worth of files and a lot of C++ packages installed

I heard really bad things about virmach. like downtime or server unusable for days. They also haven't replied to my sales questions from last year
