@Cryptominer937 can you share a yabs for that HDD? Just curious how that machines performs.
Well I've already got the 3TB disks from the existing NAS, I'd just reuse those.
I don't really think I need a 4 Bay NAS so I'm just looking at other 2 Bay options right now
He posted that he'd do it tomorrow, closer to the giveaway.
More powerful Synology is worth it, I personally dont recommend any of the ARM based Synology, they are just too underpowered. If you have a bit more to spend get the one with NVMe slot.
Synology Photos work decently well and I also run a few Docker containers on it. HDD VPS I gotten from LET acts as backup and provides a public IPv4 for my NAS
The best thing imo is the hardware just works especially for people like me who doesnt have experience building production server, it has been tested to run 24/7 all the time.
Just saw the cheapest 2 Bay non-ARM Synology is $535 AUD and its a J4125, jesus.
How delphine tasted ?
Wouldn't dolphin water just be ocean water?
Wait for Black Friday or the like maybe, I got one at ~250 USD. The budget might be a bit low for Synology but for me I value family and memories much more than anything else so I dont mind splurge a bit. And generally Synology device lasts 5-10 years so at $25-50/yr it is quite decent.
Are there any specific features you need/want? This might help narrow things down: https://github.com/007revad/Synology_Information_Wiki
Another potential point to consider is that I remember some issue with them trying to restrict the 'officially approved' drives for more recent NAS to their own branded drives. I heard there were some workarounds and Idk if it was reversed, but the last time I looked into it was maybe 2 years ago.
Workaround still works so no issue here.
Oh this NAS is just for me, I've got a separate 220J that stores family shit on it.
This is for my Linux ISOs and backups etc
And my shucked external HDD case isn't good enough for you?! Talk about hoity-toity.
Oh in that case just get those N100 Mini PC, it can go as low as ~US$100 and you can get external HDD enclosure / dock and you are all set, pretty low power consumptions.
Was just hoping for a less restrictive and locked down UI / feature set aswell as not dropping to dogshit levels of performance when trying to use it for more than 10 minutes at a time.
But I'd imagine I probably need to go the hard route and put TrueNAS on something built to get the less restrictive feature / UI.
I have a Radxa X4 if that counts
Or just buy a cheaper refurbished Windows PC, move the OS to an SSD, and shove your drives in? You should still be able to use RAID.
Edit: it would use more power than a dedicated NAS, but you could have much better CPU performance and not have to worry about your array dying if the USB cable gets disconnected.
🥲 I was setting up servers and missed the auction.
That's on you. Low-end servers are meant to be idled.
I remember having Raid issues with one of these cheap external docks before, but that might've been trying to use Windows Software Raid before I actually knew anything
I've got plenty of refurb PC's already and like 3 unused Mini PC's but I was looking for a more set and forget solution, was mainly hoping to see if anyone had any other brand alternatives or maybe any luck with those dodgy looking NAS's you can buy on Aliexpress

I missed too
But I must do at least one YAB's before idling or what's the point?
