I have to say nothing beats the convenience and reliability of Synology yet... the complain is weak CPU and Synology seems to deprecating a lot of features lately.
Easy to setup for my family members who have zero IT knowledge and it just works.
If you have some time to spend sure you can build your own and run TrueNAS etc
