@Frosby This was on my YouTube feed today -

    Damn chrome tracking.

Use Firefox without any privacy addons. Maybe time to add those as well.

We don't know how they even tracking. Some times we get product recommendations or news recommendations when we discuss things at home. I think may be its my echo.

I have had the same experience. Musk once mentioned the new AirPods (unreleased, Ig) had the capability to read brain signals - https://www.letemsvetemapplem.eu/en/2024/08/19/elon-musk-rekl-ze-airpods-jsou-nejnebezpecnejsi-produkt-na-svete-akorat-ze-vubec/

It's scary why my phone could be doing, when even smaller AirPods are capable of that.

Just had some experience few hours back. Me and my wife were discussing about our weights. 5 minutes later a notification came on my wife's mobile about some news article for weight loss. :D

This is, to say the very least, scary!

Obviously. These experiences are getting frequent. Have to turnoff some devices and test this.

I don't think anything will work. We are surrounded by Chinese made smartphones. Until or unless someone's ready to make a very deep dive into these devices, we will never know for sure.

The reason i run own adguard DNS server is to block almost all the analytics and telemetry services from the devices i own, on the run i am the DNS over TLS running on my devices if not connected to a VPN service(again on one of my servers), I am thinking of adding another server with 3500x(got spare), GA A520m K, 32GB ECC DDR4, 1-2TB nvme and 2x 2-4TB HDD in RAID10, for bunch of containers and services, i will be relying on using CF tunnel and tailscale. The 3500x will be throttled at 45w max with full load and i might use an old gt720 low profile for occasional checkups requiring a display output.

    Running this at home 24x7?

Yeah it will run 24x7 unless something fails or power gets disconnected for more than 4 hours. My ups will be able to power this continuously for like 4 hours or something, or i might need a spare inverter for the homelab alone.

Thats an impressive UPS. What is that? Inverter is the best option though, it powers the whole house along with gadgets..

I just learned my UPS battery is dead/dying... had a power outage, it lasted 2 mins when it said 30 on the screen... oof

Time to replace battery. How long did it last? I mean battery life.

I mean bought it 3 years ago "new in box" (it did appear so at the time) from a homelab dude in the area

3years is good time for battery I think. How much backup it gave when its new?

I mean, never had the power go out in college

I believe most UPS systems say you should replace it like every 2 years. I test mine every spring (well, after all the snow melts/everything dries outside) since I will typically take my systems outside to get rid of any dust they collected... I say mine typically last about 3-4 years. Do not trust a health check unless it actually puts the load on the batteries since I've had them report good but either last a couple minutes or instant off when they lost power. In my home rack, I have two that feed a switched PDU. So I unplug the active one from the wall to see how it behaves and the 2nd can take over. Then I do the same thing to the other one.

That's the way to do it, or just get deep cycle SLA batteries or perhaps lithium ones.

Well, this may soon have to become the norm. I might have to run OpenWRT on a secondary router and set up Adguard and other packages helping block unwanted elements soon. This problem has become so widespread now. At one point, it was sporadic. But, right now, everyone's got so used to it, that they think it's normal for devices around them snooping on their conversation, or maybe possibly, even read their brain waves.

I would suggest you to get a raspberry Pi zero and run your DNS from there, setup your router to use the endpoint. If using adguard or technitium use unbound as the resolver instead of querying google and such.

didnt they recently come out with custom hardware for that?

Yup, an overpriced unbrickable (NOR backup) OpenWrt One, though $10 does go into the developer pool on every purchase.

    yes support the devs lol

I don't mind sending $10 to them directly. But, $90 for that device is not okay, imo. @TrK showed me another board which has much better specs for the same price. Don't remember its name now. Was it a Banana?

Nano pi, i am a big fan of these little power houses.

Since past few blackfridays, I actually haven't gone for another VPS or an upgrade to service.

When I joined racknerd, I was given a free vps and it was merged with another paid VPS i bought after testing the services, I continued to hold onto it as my primary and ONLY service along with a web hosting plan from @dustinc .

Eventually with the passage of times, 4 years down the years I do feel the storage is insufficient for my needs, given great deals given around by providers in this BF sale.

However i would still want RN to be my primary provider.

@dustinc please advise if someone wants an upgrade to their existing VPS without going for a new one which way would it be?

Hi @godslayer -- Thank You for being a loyal customer of RackNerd over the years! We're a flexible company, and we love working with long term clients such as yourself to ensure they continue to get great value from their services.

Yah, was planning to do something like that, but, with OpenWrt, Ig, it'd be better if I just get a powerful router or the board you mentioned and set it up from there.

If you are able to get nanopi r5s you can dump the technitium or adguard on a docker container along with openwrt there, if not just getting a raspberry Pi zero will do fine with your existing router.

I find Nano Pi more interesting. Might just get that.
