Why are the VPS providers here so cheap?

They don't offer that package anymore, right?

  • Plenty of summer hosts and scams are going on; be careful. Cheap can turn out to be very expensive. Beware; you have been warned.

  • I've had a 1€ / month VPS from @LowHosting, one year clocked. It's a single-core Ryzen in Germany with excellent reliability. It's because of this VPS that I bought an Asus+Ryzen computer to replace my current Supermicro+Xeon workstation. Will see.

Because we love wasting our time and money trying to make an infrastructure up and running as cheaply as possible.
But in fact we spend three times as much money as we would buying from reliable providers, because we don't want to miss out on any bargains, and half the stuff we buy is crap we end up not using even though we've paid for the year.
I think I've summed it up.
    Welcome !

    +1. Totally agree 💯

Yeah, it's a gamble basically. Really good for side projects, dev boxes. Anything where losing it down the road won't really hurt you all that much.

Also at $1/m, you really are paying too much.

    In seriousness however...

You can mitigate the risk over time by seeing who's stable and provided services consistently long term. They tend to be providers selling services below or at margin just to make BF exciting. Others use it as an opportunity to try and build a business (think of it almost like a humble bundle or crowd sourcing at lower cost). The risk is the smaller guys may not retain traction into the next year. Big guys may decide the costs aren't worth it.

I have a decent income from projects hosted on my server (€ 100/month). I don't think I can go below NetCup in terms of service quality. However, if you can recommend someone highly reliable, I'd be happy to take a look.

What memories of OVH. I was so unlucky to be in the data center when it caught fire, but even before the fire, it certainly wasn't a reliability champion

Hnm, I get that was just telling that I too own a ryzen laptop. The ryzen AI laptops are not yet cheap [as in like normal laptops] so I didn't buy that instead went with the 7000 series. The AI series laptops are maybe 2 genration above [after 8000 series].

Actually, I checked the invoice just now.
It appears that OVH US collects tax on behalf for the EU.

Hetzner does the same. It charges Texas State Tax.

NetCup was charging tax earlier, but they stopped doing since few months. So my €1 vps (with VAT) changed to €0.84 / month

I've been using Hetzner since 2018 and I'm overall happy with it. Although the prices are already low, I see that here we’re talking about a fraction of what I currently pay per month. There are even VPS under $1 a month.

    What's the catch?

I’m genuinely interested in supporting EU local hosting companies. Is Hetzner overpriced for cloud VPS?

    Hi,

with Hetzner you are not (only) paying the resources or the support.

You are paying for a good portion the name and fact that you are unaware of the many smaller providers who offers more for less.

You should never forget: Hetzner is a massprovider. With all up's and down's that come with it.

I see this place as like a market place for VPS computing.

And I guess it’s like how you can buy a rose for £15 at a petrol station but get one almost for free from next door.

In fact, the lowest prices are from providers that are not well-known. Hetzner is among the top 3 most affordable in Europe in terms of value for money, and it's really hard to find anyone with a service of the same caliber but at a lower price.
