Processor & RAM Position in a Motherboard

MetroVPS_NMPMetroVPS_NMP Host Rep, Veteran

Here are two (2) motherboards. Is there any consumer board in which RAM is placed like the AsrockRack's one ? Also, do you know why in two different segment RAM position is totally different ?

    Airflow is front to back in a constrained case, if the RAM is in front of the CPU it blocks air from flowing thru the heatsink.

    What's funny is the mounting and CPU socket is even turned in the second board. So while yes the ram won't be blocking from the front, the damn CPU cooler is also turned. You would need to find a cooler that can be placed in any four direction so it's not facing the ram.

    That's to be expected. On most boards, the RAM will be placed closest to the pins on the chip that carry the DDR interface, otherwise it'd be a real pain to route the traces on the motherboard. It'd be possible to have the RAM elsewhere, but the signal traces would be longer and the board might need an extra layer to route everything around, so it'd cost more and the board designer would only do if there was an exceptionally good reason for it.
