How do you add extra IP to OVH?

Hi,

I want to use the extra IPv4 (which is in Germany) as an Alias IP configuration on my server and use the additional IP as a failover of my primary IP (RBX France).

I have followed this:

https://help.ovhcloud.com/csm/en-dedicated-servers-network-ipaliasing?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0043756#debian-12-ubuntu-2004-and-following

But still, the second IP is now showing when I check with:

IP a

What am I missing or perhaps doing wrong?

  • i don't think you're going to be able to add a german ip to your french server

  • What exactly are you trying to achieve?
Doing as described in manual will add the new IP to the same interface, eno1 or whatever it was. Yes, ip a will show both IPs and server will respond to ping requests on both IPs.

It is possible to choose geolocation of an additional IP. Internally it will belong to the same region as the server, but whois/geoip will indicate it as something else.

I have followed the manual and want to use the secondary IP to the second nameserver I have set. Also, put some sites on this new IP.

It's still not showing in my server when I do.

    root@max:~# ip a

It only shows the first IPv4 and IPv6 which came with the server.

  • Judging from your link, you have netplan.
Just to make sure - INTERFACE_NAME in new file should be the same as in the original, same as the interface you see with ip a.
Did sudo netplan try complain about anything except of gateway6? It might also offer you to press Enter to apply changes immediately.

ovh allows to select from many geos when ordering IPs

if they're actually geo'd there according to whatever checker/tool, that's up to luck
