It's okay for longer domains, but the shorter you want the more tricky it gets. And if you want a specific one with 2-3 letters that's extremely hard/expensive now.

1 Minute off is not broken, just a sync issue and probably timeout
I remember back in 2021, I paid $16 for a 10-year .life domain all at once.
You can still get two character domain for basic price but it's usually combination of letter and number and you need to search the less popular TLDs (not catalogued by the big registrars) like .lu, .cl, .pe, .tn.
I know on socialstack there was some domain for 10-years for like 40$ but never found cheaper.
The $8 was a typo in the posted offer, the correct price has always been $8.99 (aka 25% off $11.99)
Think at one point .ro was a one-time registration which they changed it a few years after, I also had luck with crazydomains back in the day for a 10 year renewal on .info for cheap but that was....way more than 10 years ago
