Meanwhile in reality ... concrete report: I just went into the panel and rebooted my VPS.

Lucky you. I already over 36 hours have not access to the panel. It's dead. Same goes
It came up normally, I saw no disk related problems - but I couldn't reach (ping) anything outside the LAN.

I'm sorry for you. I guess it depends on the location and the UK location, being their home base, was fixed first and in that sense I was lucky indeed.
Still, I'd take that - with other locations - as a signal of hope as in "they actually do care, even during a weekend".

So, it seems whole riverbeds were dug to be cried full ... only to find out that, whatever the problem was, @MassiveGRID seems to actually get things working again on a weekend.

Ofcourse. They advertise with 24/7. They advertise with HA. They advertise with no single points of failure. Where are all these things? Nowhere. All 3 locations down.

I get your point but I think it's misplaced because here we're talking about a ridiculously cheap promo VPS which of course can not reasonably be expected to be HA.
But still, @MassiveGRID rather than even mentioning HA in their promo thread, should have made really clear that their promo VPS is not a HA product.

And where are they to comment on what's happening?

So, will those who demanded MG to be lynched, deactivated on LET, torn down by PayPal etc. due to their VPS down during a weekend, now apologize and/or at least admit that they acted like a lynch mob? I don't hold my breath ...

No I won't. Because this is not a standalone incident; performance has been a drama for weeks already. If you believe in fairytales, go ahead. I don't, and the point of giving up on MG has been reached with the massive outage this weekend.

Well, that's your right. Humans are diverse, some are more optimistic, some less so. If you have lost your trust in MG I do not share that feeling but I certainly understand that some may come to that conclusion.
Maybe I was lucky or their UK locations is more stable. My VPS did not have any interruption of service since I've got it.

I think, waiting for one work day, i.e. until monday evening, would be reasonable compromise.

Not only do they mention HA on the thread, its also part of the actual product name on the portal and inside your order details. So legally they have to make it a HA service otherwise it's misleading.

I don't understand the point your trying to make here.

Feedback on issues some of our customers unfortunately faced

As we learn something new every day, it seems that some nodes in our clusters hit some vendor limits causing network cards to lose connectivity.

After some days of hard work to find the root cause since the behavior isn't consistent and affects randomly few VPS in some nodes in one particular cluster, we're close to the permanent solution.

Please whoever has issues, raise a ticket so that our team can immediately focus there.

We're committed to provide a good service for all our customers and we'll pay 100% attention to everyone facing an issue.

A quick resolution to that is to make a complete stop of your server and then start it again from our control panel: https://portal.massivegrid.com

Your server will start with the new configuration that resolves the issue. That configuration has been deployed in all our nodes and clusters (even those that didn't face issues).

Your proposed Stop and Start did not change a thing with regards to errors causing simple wgets to otherwise pingable addresses to not work (not to speak of things like git or apt), sadly. Ticket is already submitted btw.

Why are you defending them so hard? If I went to a market and they were advertising large pretzels for $0.50 and they instead handed me half a pretzel worth of crumbs, I'd be pretty annoyed, and rightfully so.

This company advertised HA VPS, did not provide HA VPS and has had incredible downtime over the past few weeks of their sale period. Isn't replying to support tickets and barely replies here where they got all their customers. Just because something's cheap, doesn't mean you only need to provide a tiny bit of the provided service and that's it.

  • Service is back running, could access the cp finally.

Hello, there were indeed issues that affected some customers in some nodes in few clusters.

From our side, once we found the root cause of the issue in the hypervisor, the team worked hard over the weekend to make the changes in all our nodes and clusters worldwide and inform customers immediately.

To make things clear it's true that we're running HA Clusters (yes even for clients that faced the issues above) and we're up to date with all the support tickets.

We know that some customers were stressed because their service didn't work and we're very compassionate to this, and upset of that issue on the hypervisor.

We're committed, passionate and obsessed to provide a good service and we'll never stop until every single customer has the most reliable service.

  • Order Number 6943929064, please give me the 4th year :) THanks !!!

FWIW 3/3 of my servers are up (both inbound and outbound network) after shutting down for a few minutes and restarting per ticket https://status.samj.net/

Here's what they had to say on the subject:

"If you're still facing issues, can you please make a complete stop, leave it stopped for 1 min and then start your server again.

After that please let us know if your server is stable and is working properly on your end.

The root cause of the recent instabilities is that faced a bug in the mac addresses fdb of the hypervisor that caused this in some nodes in our clusters. We've updated all nodes in all our clusters during the weekend to avoid our customers to face such issues in the future."

Now if you could just flag orders 9051207864, 8810615977, and 5136576280 if you haven't already then I'll hopefully be able to stop monitoring this thread

I'm not defending them but try to stay realistic and reasonable.

Meanwhile @MassiveGRID themselves stated (stupidly IMO) that even the < $1 promo VPS are HA - and I don't give a flying fuck. Reason: The rather few VPS with significantly more than 10 TB traffic volume I have and know about all cost >= 5 times the price of the MG promo VPS, and those are not even HA. In other words: when some provider tells me that his ridiculously low priced promo VPS < $1/mo is HA I simply laugh at him and I do the same with people who seriously expect such a thingy to somehow be HA.

So, my "reasonable" works both ways. What actually happened is that some provider who promo sold a ridiculously cheap VPS here (and btw. not a crappy one) had some down-time. During a weekend. IMO there was no reason to expect them to solve the problem before monday; that's how I approached that. Kudos to MG that they actually did take care of the problem during a weekend, which is something that not every provider does, especially not the super-cheap ones.

At the same time MG said that those VPS are somehow "HA", which i never took seriously, not even a moment. And bloody evidently my take was correct as we now all learned. "hours of down-time" != HA, simple as that.
Sadly though, quite a few people did take the HA BS seriously and approached the situation like "Hey, I paid for a HA VPS!".

Again, feet on the ground, please, what we purchased was a ridiculously cheap sub $1/mo VPS!
