These were brand new. But, they tried to cheat him at first, bringing him drives that were almost out of warranty. He checked each serial number and only when he got a drive that had full warranty, did he get it.

i got it, the famous one's don't deal with used stuff, the drive might have been misplaced to the used section. It sometimes happens one of my friends got 1tb in 1.5K and it was new just powered on hours 2.

Maybe that's the case. But, he mentioned he had checked the SMART values and it said, it was unused. Not sure if the geniuses at NP found ways to manipulate that as well.
