  • I couldn't resist and ordered an MD32.

I immediately asked via support ticket to boot the rescue image.

It's possible to change the OS. :)

    Distributor ID: Ubuntu
    Description: Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS
    Release: 22.04
    Codename: jammy

I decided to install ubuntu via debootstrap method. You can find plenty of tutorials for it.

I can give you one important advice though. These boxes get booted via legacy BIOS - so no boot from NVMe. That's why every box has two USB sticks in RAID 1 permanently attached to them (I was wondering about that at first).
You can find valuable info on how to handle /boot and bootloader install here: https://github.com/MagnaCapax/mcxSauces/blob/main/baremetal/mdSeries/cloneLiveSystem.sh

There is one caveat though. You pretty much have to succeed first try or wait for a long time.
From ticket creation to reaction/rescue mode took about 38 hours (admittedly it was weekend).

So if you don't succeed the first time and have to ask them for another reboot it will take time...

Having the 3 options hard reboot / reinstall OS / boot into rescue in a user control panel should be number 1 priority above everything else - but that's just my humble opinion.

What I totally overestimated is the performance of the 7500T (but hey that's totally my fault!). You'll realize it running your first apt commands. :dizzy:

  • I've decided I will maybe revisit them once they have implemented the above mentioned user control panel functions.
I'm just not patient enough for their ticket reaction times otherwise.
My current ticket is open since October 22nd with no reaction from them.

I had to ask for reboot into rescue again, since the file system became read only and every ssh command was answered with Bus error.

I'm suspecting a hardware/disk failure which would explain the odd and slow behaviour before (which I thought was the CPU).

But I had no chance to check yet or inspect this further.
But hey - paying for downtime instead of uptime is a new experience - so there's that. :D

Yes, it's great. The core graphics card he has meets my requirements very well.
However, once I make a mistake or there is a problem with the program, it cannot connect to the Internet. This is a nightmare, I need to wait for a ticket to reinstall or restart my server, which takes a very long time. Please provide hard reboot / reinstall OS / boot into rescue.
This is very important for users, please pay attention to this issue

  • I read all of this post.
It seems that the panel has been under development and internal testing, but some nodes already have hard reset and rescue mode. Which model do I need to buy to get these features?
Second, what I want to say is that it is not difficult to install other systems based on vm, but how to configure the NAT network and how to enable the core graphics card to run in the virtual machine. These are the problems. Once these operations are performed incorrectly, the system will not be able to start/cannot connect to the Internet.

    Example NAT setup for proxmox:
There are plenty of tutorials, make sure you got the modules etc too.

    auto vmbr0
    iface vmbr0 inet static
            address IP_ADDRESS/24
            gateway GATEWAY_IP
            bridge-ports eth0
            bridge-stp off
            bridge-fd 0

    auto vmbr1
    iface vmbr1 inet static
            address 10.0.0.1/24
            bridge-ports none
            bridge-stp off
            bridge-fd 0
            post-up echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
            post-up iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s '10.0.0.0/24' -o vmbr0 -j MASQUERADE
            post-down iptables -t nat -D POSTROUTING -s '10.0.0.0/24' -o vmbr0 -j MASQUERADE

Yes, I received it, an hour to two hours ago.
Although my service only costs 22 euros, I expect a relatively quick response.

  • @PulsedMedia To be honest, your server is very good and the price is very favorable. It is simply the best equipment for me. However, because the Debian system is not compatible with the programs I need, I have to add various dependencies, manually compile various software packages or install various virtual environments to make it compatible. In this process, the system is always damaged and has to be reinstalled repeatedly. I can feel that the maintainer is a little dissatisfied with me, but I have no choice and I have tried my best. The system environment is not normal and can only be reinstalled.
If you can support online webpage maintenance as soon as possible, or add Ubuntu system, I will become your most loyal user.

Install libvirt/Proxmox and then install your compatible OS as a KVM virtual machine. after that you won't need to touch the Debian base system 99% of the time.

Not sure yet if we have too much, we have been too preoccupied getting the new DC built and honing the production of MD units (only to be held back by the DC not finished yet. We got the connectivity there couple weeks back, but electricity ain't there yet, and cooling only partially)

The constant downtime and zero communication is still ongoing and is extremely dissapointing.

Since September 7th there have been 7 outages - 1 lasted under a day, 1 was an hour, the other 5 all lasted longer than 24 hours.

The current outage is now over 3 days long.
Almost a week of downtime the last 30 days.

Total downtime in the last 330 days is 3 weeks.

Tickets go un-answered, no updates/answers on discord, and no announcements on any channels.

There's right now a issue with some of the MD series nodes remote reboots, and 2 different remote hands guys could not solve it.

Will be solved on Tuesday by current estimate. Only 2 units affected right now, but just a heads up. This is iterative HW development, and we need to change course on how to handle the remote reboots (first batch of hardware already ordered for that) to increase robustness of the backend.
That change might eventually lead to more advanced features regardless, and per node overhead is less than 10€/node in CapEx, OpEx yet to be determined (if more robust might turn out to be "negative", ie. cost saving)

We finally are starting to get the new DC ready, first 4 or 8 racks has been electrified, and should be getting the routers etc. within couple weeks etc.

Lots of work to do be done remains before we truly start to scale the MD platform.

This has been quite a journey, but we have built a integrated cooling datacenter, driving even further efficiency on the servers. We pressurize the cold aisle with large fans, so tiny fans are released further.

Most of the hardware is 2nd hand, refurbished. Racks, Electrical Cabinets etc. all second hand. We saved A LOT of money doing that, which will trickle on the final costs of MD servers once we start hitting scale.

My MD uptime is 99.9793% over 9 months. My downs are mainly rebooting from software upgrades.

    Thanks! :)

@tjn sorry you had pain. We'll try to do better once all the monitoring etc. has been developed, and if you have an actual HW issue you can get your node replaced swiftly through a ticket. Automation is on the plans, it just all takes time.
