Tomorrow, I am gonna add a cooling fan to my old Android box, if I have the time. It has this kind of heat sink:-

Any ideas if I should do inlet or outlet on these? Internet is divided.

honestly, anything works, android boxes aren't designed to be that hotter anyway unless you are doing some overclocking.

Nah, I am gonna run Jellyfin on Docker and when it's transcoding, it can get hot. I can disable transcoding, but, if someone plays with the unofficial client, I want it to be able to handle that.

why not get something better than android box for jelly, i believe i saw a mini PC with N5105 going for around 10K(new) and i5-4th gen refurbished mini PCs for around 6K. Would be much better.

Presently, don't have the funds to even get that. Moreover, the Android box has been in the junk drawer for quite long now. Wanted to put it to good use.

Oh okay, as for heating use that with outlet and some good quality thermal pad, it should be able to handle that but not for long. For the long term i would still suggest to go with something better. I have my eyes on that n5105 due to really low power usage then usual i5-4th gen, or maybe i would get another mini PC i5 8th gen or above and have my i5-4th gen turned into transcoder for plex.

Docker is something I still want to give a try. Now that I have won a 1GB VPS in dallas, I am going to play around with setting up docker to use that to help setup and deploy applications and environments. I also have been wanting to learn some ansible in conjuction with that. I am honsety not too familiar with either so there may be some overlap in the capabilties of the 2. Now that I have the spare 1GB vps I have won, I can practice some more remote deploy ment strategies and other things to ease my process when I do need to scale out or bring up another instance somewhere. Tools these days almost make things too easy so I should learn to start using them

I started using Docker only recently. As per my understanding, it's kinda like mini-VMs with their own chroot like environment. But, they don't take up a lot of resources like full blown VMs.

any idea how to check the CPU % usage for a racknerd vps?

I can see HDD and BW in the SolusVM Control Panel, but not the CPU? 🤔

I would suggest using something like htop or top via ssh as a good tool to see cpu usage. top should be built in to almost every linux distribution out there I believe. If you like bare bones, it is possible for something like top to be removed however so perhaps your mileage may vary. This does require you to SSH into your VPS though so if you are alooking for a solution to see this from the dashboard on their website I am not quite sure if there is a way.

PErhaps if you win another vps, you can setup a web app with a dashboard to display stats such as this from all of your other VPS! You can build a web app that display CPU, RAM, disk usage. That would be quite interesting. A custom racknerd monitoring solution for rack nerd services powered by rack nerd services! The ulimate power tool made possible by rack nerd!

Aah. That sounds like a good idea. I have heard that Intel is not bad for transcoding. On the top we have Apple ofcourse. And, it won't be a good idea to get a MAc Mini to just run a media server. Your idea seems like a great option for me. An Intel Mini PC would gaurantee "not-bad" transcoding performance on top of being a low-power user, which is perfect for my use case.

Correction not VMs but containers, it's same like python virtualenv, but different use cases, virtualenv can encapsulate python dependencies only while docker can for the entire OS. Docker is similar to lxc if you ask me both for the containers.

As for the case itself, it is much like any other slim Android boxes. But, the challenge is that the heat sink is placed upside down such that the pronged pins face downward. It does have the space to fit a 40x40x15mm fan inside it.

    Hi!
My RackNerd Order Number is: 2697167326
    Invoice #13833956

I would like to get free double bandwidth. With you since 2022, thank you for your service guys!

  • I am planning to just install a fan inside (not a fan of those DIY projects with the fan on the outside) and strip the wires and directly solder them to a USB port. Then, use some bush or something like that to give it some height for proper airflow.

Correction not VMs but containers, it's same like python virtualenv, but different use cases, virtualenv can encapsulate python dependencies only while docker can for the entire OS. Docker is similar to lxc if you ask me both for the containers.

Yup especially with the 10w TDP n5105 looks promising and the best part i can upgrade the parts later on(i believe i can)

How much would that cost in Nehru Place? Or, is it better to get one online?

The one i am seeing online is giving me much better value(more if you have the cashback card), it's currently priced at 11K with 1K discount on BF coupon and 5% cashback with cashback card(i am looking for this one).

    Can you share the link?

It's praho 2.1, but still do your research before buying anything. There might be something cheaper than that.

haven't heard of the brand though. Got any experience with that?

I was confused when it said, "With Graphics Card." It's UHD.
Regardless, a great deal for the price.
