We need talk about creating homepages
Hi all!
Okay, I am going to jump right into it.
Many will think, what a freaking idiot this guy is, but listen first before responding.
I learned how to setup a working homepage with installation MySQL, etc etc. I also bought domains for my homepage to get them up and running.
Everything went quite well, and I started to learn WordPress and got the site up and running online.
Now, here comes my completely confused state and I am a little bit confused and need som help with it.
First, I noticed because I do like to experiment I broke my WordPress sites several times in the hopes of keep learning from my mistakes. Which is fine, but it is time consuming as hell to setup everything again.
This was the first lesson, don't just install everything on the Linux and then mess everything up.I got introduced to Docker where it was a "Install all solution" isolated in the docker, so if I messed up something I could just make small tweaks like changing the folder name and just start again. This is fine, but the main problem I had is that I got several failures when trying to setup up the docker and in the end after 6 different tutorials with 6 failures I gave up on it.
Now keep on mind that I still can set up the homepage manually in Linux terminal which is fine, but I experiment to much in purpose to learn so I break a lot.
Because Docker failed I looked around for solutions to get something up fast and quickly, I do check around and seeing a lot of something called Webhosting, from my understanding you can just push a button and then bind your domain to the WordPress site and you are ready to go (It does sound a lot like a docker).
Anyways I am looking around at these and see a lot of offers, but I am hesitant to try because of the bandwidth restrictions and that I maybe won't know how to use Webhosting. Being a guy who likes to experiment a lot.
When it comes to specs on server and Vps I am comfortable, but Webhosting is a little bit question mark I have ignored for years because I have never earlier even tried to setup a homepage.
- So if someone has a good guide and explanation exactly how it is used and what it does exactly I would appreciate it.
Also I am curious a little bit about specs and other stuff.
Example A:
I am building a homepage with a couple of pics around it and mostly text written.
No Sales
But merchandise will be available with direct link to some shop on a whatever plattform.
While the homepage has many menus as the visitors can read up a lot about thing.
My question is while the page will become quite big over time, what specs is good for a site that does not have anything to sell or not a lot of pictures.
I am using:
2 Core Intel Gold
4gb Ram
50Gb NAME
Unlimited Bandwidth.
In Germany
(For people to have a laugh on this, I reinstalled the server around 30 times in 24 hours. I wonder what the Provider was thinking when they saw someone keep reinstalling their server LOL)
Example B:
I have not decided on Specs, but several thoughts have come up like:
- I am going to upload a lot of pictures, self made, but +18 style which is for adults. Nothing illegal at all, but should I maybe get a Server in Amsterdam or Luxemburg in this case?
- Because the pictures will be high definition with like 3-4mb per picture. Should I instead consider just using a cloud storage with LINK because of the risk of slowing down the site?
- I will maybe put up Paypal Payments on the site, but I have no clue yet at least how to set it up yet.
While this one is more heavy and a lot more stuff will be on the server. What would be a good option in this case?
Also the other general questions:
-I noticed WordPress slows down when installing to much crap plugin on it. Does anyone have a list of free plugin that is a must when start building the website?
- instead of spending time with installing everything in Linux? What other option is cheap for me to use instead that is not time confusing?
- Does anyone have a really good tutorial in Dockers for WordPress?
- Should I just switch to a Webhosting service?
- about pictures on site, is it better to use some storage solution instead?
Depending on answers I would love if I could get recommendations on providers also if that will be an answer, but I don't want to a fortune to run a simple homepage.
I hope I didn't raise a lot of haters for the questions.
Kindly Regards
Law ballers

Use Hugo if WordPress is too hard
This post is wayyyyy too long... Could you consider using AI to rewrite the content and be more precise?
If I am in your situation, I would get a shared hosting (web hosting) and put all of your "mature" stuff through cloud storage.
Shared hosting take care of most server maintenance for you and provide you with a super ease to use interface to allow you to focus on the website part. You still have to maintain your website (update content, software, plugins) but it's way less work and less likely to mess up everything due to unwanted changes.
Shared hosting vs VPS: https://www.hostinger.com/tutorials/shared-hosting-vs-vps-hosting/
The only major concern is your content... At least in U.S., a lot of hosting providers (shared hosting, VPS, dedicated hosting) does not allow adult content. You need to look into the terms of service and acceptable use policy of the host before making a purchase.
And this is what Gemini want to say:
Summary:
The user is struggling to set up a WordPress website. They've tried manual installation, Docker, and are now considering web hosting. They're unsure about server specifications, plugin choices, and picture storage solutions.
Response:
Hi Law Ballers,
No worries about the questions! It's great to see your enthusiasm for learning and experimentation. Let's break down your concerns:
Docker and Web Hosting:
* Docker: While powerful, Docker can be complex for beginners. If you're comfortable with the command line, it's a great tool to learn. However, for simpler setups, web hosting might be more user-friendly.
* Web Hosting: Web hosting services provide pre-configured environments for running websites. They handle server management, security, and performance optimization, making it easier to get started. Popular options include:
* Shared Hosting: Affordable for basic websites with limited resources.
* VPS Hosting: More control and resources than shared hosting, but requires more technical knowledge.
* Cloud Hosting: Highly scalable and flexible, but can be more expensive.
Server Specifications and Picture Storage:
* Server Specs: For a text-heavy website without many images, your current specs should be sufficient. However, for a site with many high-resolution images, you might need more storage and bandwidth. Consider using a cloud storage solution like Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage to store large files and link them to your website.
* Picture Storage: For adult content, be mindful of legal and ethical considerations. Ensure your hosting provider allows such content and has robust security measures in place.
WordPress Plugins:
* Essential Plugins:
* Yoast SEO: For improving search engine visibility.
* Akismet Anti-Spam: To protect your site from spam comments.
* UpdraftPlus: For backing up your website.
* WP Super Cache or WP Rocket: For caching to improve website performance.
Additional Tips:
* Start with a Simple Setup: Begin with a basic theme and minimal plugins. As your website grows, you can add more features.
* Learn from Tutorials and Documentation: There are countless tutorials and documentation available for WordPress and web hosting. Take advantage of these resources.
* Seek Help from the Community: Join WordPress forums and communities to ask questions and get advice from experienced users.
By following these guidelines and experimenting, you'll be able to create a successful website. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks to the @xpreboun for a proper answer. It does really help a lot. I completely understand what you mean with the DMCA warning, it will be hard to find a Webhosting + Cloud storage in a DMCA free country. There is though Amsterdam, Luxemburg,, Singapore, Malaysia. I need to check it properly. I appreciate the answer and Yes I am very comfortable with Linix terminal, not that good with Desktop though.
I agree with you that mistakes help a lot. In my mind is that the time consumption to set everything up in the server. I do agrree though that I need to find DMCA free server and provider.
@egoror Never heard of Hugo. What is that?
So I read it.. I think you are doing fine as is, you're just too worried while the substance is good. No need for Amsterdam. You can drop Docker to make things simpler to manage, those monkeys at reddit must have recommended it to you. It just adds a layer of complexity that your website doesn't benefit from currently, avoid it and simplify. A CDN for distributing those hot sexy selfies is likely unnecessary for the time being, as you probably have 1Gbps+ already. And your current hardware specifications are fine too unless you want to bog WP down with crap plugins written by the same monkeys.
Recommended actions: nothing.
Static page generator, everyone is using it for blogs and homepages.
@davide thanks for the response.
You are most probably right in this case. I mean to learn everything in Linux and setting up the WordPress and connect the domain maybe is better. I should maybe think of taking a backup and figure that part out.
For the CDN part. The reason why I was asking for a Adult Content thing is because I write books, one of the servers are for one of my Pen names which I write Fantasy comedy and fun stuff like that.
The adult one though I have a different name, while the books are selling Okey (being a ok writer) I have models created by me who the readers can download pics of.
That is the reason why I asked about the server. If you create your own content for the fans to download, Does that really break TOS? I mean people put up shops and sell sec toys and shit like that without getting banned.
To have the server in Germany would be perfect, but I don't want to put in all the hard work and then they tell me to move it.
If you're trying to learning Linux, your current server is fine.
Skip docker and set up a basic LEMP stack [tutorial]. And then look into optimizing performance.
If you want a hassle-free experience, you should consider buying webhosting from providers that allow adult content here.
In cPanel/DA you can easily stage/backup/autoinstall/reinstall/copy WordPress and experiment without much trouble and an optimized shared hosting plan is often faster than an unoptimized VPS setup.
Also, CDNs like Cloudflare/Fastly/Bunny support legal adult content.
@r3k
Thank you for the info, I decided to switch and try out Web Hosting as recommended. I just need to find the a good provider with some space and not costing a fortune.
CDN sounds really awesome to pinpoint it to US, EU and Asia.
List of plugin for performance, security and SEO:
I still have another 12 more plugin for other function. I can keep my website fast with plugin listed above. You can check my website https://firous.com/blog.
If you're only need homepage website without dynamic content (like blog post etc). I think you better make a static website using Astro or Eleventy (11ty) and host at Netlify or GitHub which is free.
Using Docker for WordPress it is too much work tbh. If you're still want to use VPS and WordPress, I recommend install CloudPanel which has WordPress installer. It's simple, lightweight and fast.
If you're still want to use "only" WordPress, then web hosting is better. I am also currently in a position where I will switch from VPS to Shared Hosting for WordPress only.
about pictures on site, is it better to use some storage solution instead?
There's two solution for picture/images:
Using plugin to compress
Hope it helps, take with a grain of salt. Your mileage my vary.
@alfirous
Oh man, thank you so much. This is great, your homepage looks awesome by the way, real smooth.
I have heard about Cloudpanel, even found a tutorial for it. Right now I do have a DirectAdmin web hosting for 3 dollars per month. I will upload and create and learn som stuff on it, like you mentions, static one pagers.
you mentioned the pictures on site, do you know any cheap Storage solution? When I am looking around, VPS is expensive in Netherlands and Luxemburg, but with storage and all the pictures I can make it get them smoothly, if possible from the storage instead. Maybe I can save some money on the monthly cost that way.
Can you send a list of the names of the plugins. If you think like multi menu website with a lot of pictures. I am thinking maybe later add Weecomerce(User can buy directly), but that is not in the works yet, I need to secure everything up and make sure the site is completely clean.
I am going to throw up 2 other sites, one for fans of fantasy reading and the other is a one sider, but there I think the webhosting on 100SSD is enough with unlimited on everything.
