Also, I know this is a recurrent question and can find various resources online, but would really love some input from actual users.

Nginx vs OLS considering I wanna do everything from scratch not use a pre-made Panel. This is what I will need apart front the engine: MariaDB, PHP, email server. Priority is lower RAM and CPU usage, easier caching mechanism for a custom website.

Thoughts? Any tutorials for beginners would also be helpful.

Spoken like a true nerd! aaghh I wanna do that too, but my intuition says no no

Go with the nerdness forget the intuition.

I'm not in that zen state to learn anything new right now

Why what happened? got into trouble with adsl connection? i hope not.

ahahha, I think I missed your reply about the steps to secure the cables and connect them. care to say again?

Find the junction box first nearby, then calculate the cable you need, ask your ISP to patch your fiber cable with their junction box and get a pon converter for fiber to ethernet. If your ISP is willing to help you out, it will be done within a day.

Good morning. Thats a lot of activity here! :) I see, I missed some GAs, but there were no resource upgrades, so I don't care too much :)

Indeed, I was surprised at how many pages went by when I was offline as well.

    2.5k comments yesterday... :open_mouth:

Dude. Why are you even surprised! You were here for NY2024. Maybe I am wrong. Are you saying that we are going faster than NY24 now?

There were only 3 days for NY2024 when comment count exceeded 2.5k. So if you continue like that, BF2024 might get much more :D

Let's hope not! Chill out guys

Are you afraid of losing your place? :D Don't worry, I have already lost mine :D

Lot of time to catch up, dude. November is not even done. You almost three weeks in December as well.

I somehow forgot about that 3 weeks is a lot of time, For some reason I'm convinced this will conclude on december 3rd.

You might be going on vacation on december 3rd who knows?

That could happen, you never know

We will see, especially the changes in the rankings we will see them in real time.

Yes, it is expensive. I can't afford $100 per month just for internet. when can we expect to have it for $10 a month? I thought it would be possible in just five years...but now that we're here it's still expensive.

Yeaah that's true, I'll postpone the vacation then

Yeah sure, let's go, and make some noise so the chef can present us some new GAs and flash deals.

We are here! and the thread is always on top, that's solid I'd say!

Giveaways not coming for a few hours 🙃

Nope, might be there when i fall asleep.

I think the nearest fibre junction box is 2-3km. time to forget about it?

lol you should 2-3 km fiber cable will be costly and not to mention you gotta make sure it's not tangled and damaged in between.

Haha alright, I hope they get to me soon :disappointed:

Why don't you get the Starlink? maybe Nelson can solve it but it's costly as hell.

Yes, it is expensive. I can't afford $100 per month just for internet. when can we expect to have it for $10 a month? I thought it would be possible in just five years...but now that we're here it's still expensive.

lol, not gonna happen. Satellite internet is not cheap in itself and i mean it.

I think he said that himself, his goal is to make it affordable. for now, it's useful for boats, vans...etc

Affordable for rich guys, and luxury for common people. Thats how it works with him.

Don't you guys drink more tea than coffee

Not me, i drink more coffee compared to an average person.

5 mugs a day would be nuts for me haha

You can do it, i believe in ya

Who here active on this thread right now hasn't met the chef yet, ie., hasn't been a part of BF celebration at RN before this year?

ME ME ME I NEVER ATTENDED THESE THINGS BEFORE

Welcome. You know the tips. Keep them handy. See if you can get a faster connection just for the days chef is here

I'll end up using a vps... I never tried to rdp into it, I'll have to activate the graphical UI first

Don't leave it to the last moment. But, not sure how much of an advantage that would give you if you have issues connecting to the GUI on your ADSL connection.

That's funny on it's own though

It is. But, not so fun when you realise it when the flash sale has already been announced.

Nginx till the grave, email server is fine but would you need AV and spam filter as well? If yes forger the lower ram footprint. For caching redis and memcached are the only way for me.

Thanks a lot. And what would you recommend for the email server? Any good tutorials?

    checkout mailinabox and mailcow

is it worth to host your own email server? I've heard so much bad stuff about that

Honestly, at this point I'd just go with something like MXRoute.
But yes - if you want to tinker or learn, why not?

I'd like to learn stuff. Moreover, you can't always rely on something that's cheap at a point. Chances are it might go up anytime.

True, I'm currently using Brevo's free tier, but there is always the risk that they discontinue it, I could use that mxroute as a backup

MX route has a very cheap $5/year option, I believe. But, still, I wanna learn this stuff on my own so that I could plan contnigencies.

Glad to see someone like me, we tolerate at first then get fed up with it and just ignore it

Maybe it's time, LET throw notifications only for direct quotes.

I got off for only few hours and I'm seeing 300+ notifications  I gotta read 30 pages now

    its fun, believe me

How did they burn this much pages in so little time haha

You never know when people have some serious discussions.

Wow Trk you're so close to me, stop tailgating!
Talk about a major advancement in one day! that's impressive bro, I don't think I can keep up. I might have to settle with the lovely sm7b microphone.

I don't know why people hate the RN dedi, :joy:

i dislike all servers, because after X time i have to pay

why not just own the hardware and host in the basement.

My isp wants to charge me $100 for a dedicated IP :)

Lol seriously? you can get something from orange cloud for cheap.

I just checked again, and looks like they got better deals now, but you have to be a business... and still, my line is not eligible for 1gbps so renting a vps is way more cost efficient

Lol why you need 1fbps connection at home unless you are going to host basement racks.

My line isn't even eligible for 100mbps. I just didn't want to break your heart

    Why? Old age dsl cables?

    Yeah I'm still using adsl

Bro you should upgrade, unless it's too damn costly.

I can't, our neighborhood is full of old buildings and they are still expanding fiber to the whole city, only new buildings have fiber, so the fast network I can get is 4g but sadly it's neither stable nor reliable. I'll just have to wait for now.

I was assuming you were from UAE, KSA, etc. where I have heard they got pretty fast internet.

No, I'm from Algeria, we have fast speeds & cheap plans but the isp upgrades are happening slowly.

Oh I see. Got introduced a bit to the culture there with Disco Maghreb. Would love to visit the country someday. What's the speciality in terms of tourism?

Oh Disco maghreb! you definitely heard that hit from dj snake.... is that what introduced you to it? We are genuinely helpful to foreigners and do our best to ensure a great experience. There are no scammers here since we don’t have many tourists. Algeria is the largest country in Africa, and we have it all, sea, mountains, lakes,desert.... you name it!

Oh yah. That was on loop a few months ago. I believe Snake's mother is somehow related to Algeria. Not sure. Heard that somewhere.

You got it right! Yep, his mom is algerian

Knew it. He loves doing this cultural thing. Magenta riddim was shot in India with local Indian actors.

Same thing with Disco maghreb, I totally forgot the song was called that too! You know "Disco Maghreb" is a record label that's where the song title came from. How about Magenta riddim, is it the same thing?

Oh that makes sense. The video begins with someone holding a tape cover that says Disco Maghreb, iirc. Magenta Riddim, I am not sure if the name itself has any connections to India. But, I generally love his work.
