That "36 month" magic number is a remnant from the old days, when hosts were more likely to do financial leases for servers instead of buying them. The leases were 36 months long, so it was important to retain the client for that period of time.
And although we no longer lease equipment, that "36" still remains in the minds of many. At the end of the year, for example, many of our dedicated server and large clients need to spend money, for tax purposes, and thus we offer them big discounts if they pay for 3 years...
So we thought, let's do it for virtual servers.
