maybe they use many black friday machine for scaling
backup using some storage deals from @host_c @labze
As far as I remember they use digitalocean vps with dedicated resources
I know there is an article somewhere with some details about the whole infra but I can't remember where
We Get a solid BF 2016 $7/year VPS and run everything on it.
DigitalOcean CPU optimized Premium instance with 16vCPU & 32GB RAM that was scaled to 32vCPU & 64GB RAM instance 4 days ago for BF and after CM it will be scaled back down to 16vCPU & 32GB RAM.
Never understood the reason they use this, sooo expensive in comparison to what you actually get
Transparency and trust is a huge factor - let's say they would host in smaller host such as OVH.
Imagine how thread with KS-A would go. Hate towards OVH would be very reinforced, any action of admins would be seen as "protecting the sponsor". They couldn't even ban someone straight up racist and toxic, because "you are silencing the truth about OVH" or whatever.
It's very difficult to build a trust between admins/mods and users and that trust would become too easy to break.
DO is too big and LET is too small to have such break of trust and also DO just doesn't have any drama / strong political stance connected to them. You could also host LET at AWS/GCP, but this would be more expensive.
OVH is not smaller than DO.
~$700M yearly revenue for DO, ~$900M yearly revenue for OVH. (FY'23). Plus OVH have double the staff.
But - rest of the post is mostly on the money. DO do not compete in the LowEnd space, plus are quite reliable.
Thanks for telling us but you didn't tell us the full story. There is a 128 GB USB stick connected to that VPS for the DB. That's why it's so fast (plus of course @FAT32 's wizardry ...).
Yeah, I never thought about it that way but it makes perfect sense. Hosting the website on a provider active in this space wouldn't be optimal.
~442M of that revenue which comes from France, where they host government websites and services under UGAP.
Then ~100M from domain registrations.
OVH has just 9 locations, they are not that big in context of public cloud as your numbers suggest it.
Bilou has money. A lot of it. So digitalocean instances are good purchase.
Biloubucks 🤑
Noooooo. We can't have an external stick that has triple the storage of our site.
That’s an irrelevant spin. @LordSpock is correct.
OVH is bigger, unless you want to concentrate your argument solely on the cloud client base (which inflates their net worth), as that is DO's primary operation.
Besides that, unlike DO, which simply rents space in data centers, OVH actually build and own their own data centers. So, those "15 data centers across nine regions" from DO can’t really be used as an argument about the size of the company. Even some LET middle-business hosts do that (on a smaller scale).
So, the [unnamed] admin was bragging and fooling me ...
But yes, what you say makes sense. serially gzipping files seems to work fine too.
Putting @FAT32's new @SolidSeoVPS $7/year VPS to work I see. Smart!
If that's irrelevant then McDonalds is bigger than that all, because it has even bigger revenue and staff number.
@LordSpock disagreed on my comment "smaller host such as Hetzner.".
Read that again, smaller host.
I've compared them as their hosting operations (not whole companies).
He compared their revenues and I've pointed out that Hetzner does more than what was context of this discussions, therefore "they are not that big in context of public cloud as your numbers suggest it."
I would understand your argument if I would write that Hetzner is smaller as a company, but I wrote that they are smaller as host.
Or we screw completly the definition of hosting by including building building and making hamburgers. How does it makes sense?
If they have more locations then they have customers from these locations, which is further confirmed by the fact that 50% of Hetzner revenue comes from single country.
@Arkas is it possible to modify my earlier comment by changing the example from OVH to Hetnzer and a "unmetered bandwidth" instead of "KS-A" as a source of possible drama?
This will cut the completely unnecessary discussion here. I do not have the option to edit that comment, its too old
Aren't we use HostPapa/ColoCrossing?
And he's correct. We might call it semantics, but he's correct nonetheless - OVH is a bigger host.
Your main arguments against that, which came later, was that their revenue doesn't come solely from cloud users - which is true, but it doesn't make them a smaller hosting company ("smaller host such as OVH" - with a bigger revenue and double the number of employees) if anything that makes them bigger and that they have fewer DCs than DO, which is incorrect.
They simply don't rent places as DO because they actually own their data centers.
Furthermore, you said that 50% of OVH's revenue comes from a single country, as if this were some argument regarding the size of a hosting company.
And why would you do that when we've already discussed it? That's not cool, man - retroactively changing a post that people have already responded to.
This request is comparable to asking for the deletion of a thread where people have already commented, and as such, it no longer belongs to the OP solely. It is what it is now. You can always choose not to comment on it, and there won't be any further derailment.
