Planning a Write-Up/Re-Review of my lifetime VPN/SmartDNS products, including some tests

Hello everyone,
as most of you are aware, I am a lifetime VPN hoarder and some of you may be familiar with my VPN chart (albeit I admit, I don't always keep it up to date).

Now, I've collected quite some VPNs, some of which I haven't really been using in a while, others I've been using on a daily basis. Hence, I was thinking about reflecting on them and giving those dusty ones another change to shine, too.

The VPNs that will enter the game are: Windscribe Pro Lifetime, Keepsolid Lifetime, PureVPN Lifetime (former Ivacy Lifetime grandfathered), FastestVPN, GooseVPN, and Getflix VPN (basically smartdns, but also offers vpn), Keepsolid SmartDNS, Getflix SmartDNS.

As for FastestVPN, there may or may not be some upgrade in quality (I don't know yet). someone on LE forums tagged them to upgrade existing lifetime customers to "Lifetime Pro" for free since they already have quite the bad reputation and that may just be fair instead of locking features for legacy lifetime customers. So, I reached out and asked to have my account upgraded to Pro, too. And they apparently did. At least I can now sleect Double VPN and "Pro" servers. My Account status doesn't say "Pro" though iirc. If you hold a lifetime sub, you can probably reach out to be upgraded, too :) That said, Double VPN was free/included in legacy lifetime I purchased and was a "removed" features now only available to Lifetime Pro by design, which always leaves a sour taste.

What would you like me to test?: I've thought about doing speedtests of 3-4 locations for each service (US, EU, Asia, misc)? I also wanted to compare proprietary clients (if any) and provide screenshots. For that, I will setup Virtualbox containers to conduct the testing as multiple vpn clients on my host system always hate each other. I can probably test flix unblock, but I don't have any other streaming services I can test to unblock. I'll want to include protocols offered, too. Information like "Is there a linux client available", too. Adding to that, I'll also give a short writeup about my personal experiences which, needlessly to say, are individual and subjective. I can also test configs on my Glinet wifi router if that's of interest to some?

Any more ideas/wishes?

Important: There is NO ETA for this. Uni has be occupied a lot, I'm writing my final thesis at the moment and X-MAS is approaching. It might as well be published in the new year.

Alright, let the fun begin!

Cheers!

Hm, I think mine was from 2018(?!). A couple of months ago, I couldnt connect to Pro Servers (NY and others). So, I assume I was upgraded. But maybe that's different depending on when you bought it?

mine from Apr 2023, not that old but I think it's before they have pro version. Well let's hope it's free upgrade not just temporary upgrade.

Yeah, my purchase was definietly long before Pro existed.

Do you mean torrenting? That's something I'm not really familiar with, and wouldn't want to try for copyright reasons.

    Yep, no problem.

  • I've been using FastestVPN Pro service since early 2021, before it was available, but Pro is not available.
They say the upgrade is $20. ;)

When I inquired with support about something like, "I heard that existing lifetime accounts can be upgraded for free to a version that supports WireGuard," they upgraded my account. However, since WG config files cannot be downloaded from the user portal, you also need to contact support to generate it.
They provided me with 1 config file, but I had to manually modify the Endpoint URL. That said, it works properly at least.

Make sure to note which services it is no longer possible to buy lifetime for...

I would like to buy a Windscribe lifetime subscription but it isn't possible anymore, as an example.

Protonmail, turned off the donate-once for better accounts about a month before I had money to give them, as another.

Thank you very much. I heard good things. <3
And I found a mistake in my writing.
I wanted to write that I started using Pro before it came out. c( っ °、。)っ

While I do have an own domain, I have no such intention. It'll be a post here and probably on the other forums and that's it. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

From the ones available these days, I can only really recommend Keepsolid/VPNUnlimited. But it's like 150€ now (along with some other apps they offer like smartdns, pw manager etc). That said, on Stacksocial it was sold for 60€ish in September. "Just the VPN" is offered there every now and then, still. Make sure to check https://www.stacksocial.com/brands/keepsolid for changes.

    What about monthly/anually payment?

Windscribe is on sale for 30$. Awesome features and great VPN. Get Windscribe. If you wanna be more "anonymous" get Mullvad and pay with cash.
