I would absolutely get a dedicated server just for the fun of it, I recently got a nice homelab server, been tinkering around with homeassistant, proxmox and others.
How do they afford this though? I do see that most of their plans are overpriced, like $18/mo for a 1GB ram 2vcore system??

Apart from all the awesome giveaways posted about on the main thread post, Dustin (RackNerd owner) hosts mini giveaways where he gives away everything from cash to RN credits to VPSes to RAM upgrades to service extensions to even Dedis if you are lucky. These GAs are spontaneous. So, you have to be active on the thread.

Take it this way. Major companies spend loads of dollars on advertising with other major companies and their subsidiaries. But, LET is all about community. So, most providers, esp. RN here believe the best way to gain customers is by giving back to the community which RN does aggressively. And, I believe it's a very good tactic - a win-win for both the host and the customer.

Not really, just like chemist said, I also don't want a dedi on a datacenter, ruins the fun of it for me honestly. If I'm going to be using that dedi for business then sure, but just to mess around I wouldn't get it
