Storage kvm to replace iCloud backup?
my free 5gb icloud is not enough for weekly backup.
i have synology nas at home and idrive e2 subscription and
i googled, for synology and idrive app but both is manual press button to backup.
i want something to set daily or weekly, sort of 'fire and forget'
possible to deploy kvm storage to install nextcloud for backup?
or i have 0 choices but to pay $1.48/mth for 50gb iCloud since i tied to apple eco?

Not only KVM but also a 500GB DirectAdmin storage box for 7 euros a year. Best deal so far.

Pcloud-LifetimePlan I dont know this one suitable for you or not
Filen is free for 50 gb.
Just need to ask your friends to sign up using your affiliation links and you are good to go.
but kvm, pcloud, filen
do they have mobile app where i can install on iphone and
do 1 time config and let it backup periodic?
he asked whether his iphone can automatically backup to anything other than icloud, not shilling for storage solutions. the answer is 1 search away, first result for "iphone automatically backup to storage server": https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/178917/using-my-own-server-instead-of-icloud
short answer: no
edit: looks like one of the solutions involving "wifi syncing" to itunes on a local machine may work, for remote syncing you could try to set up a vpn to the network with itunes
https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/wi-fi-syncing-mchlada1d602/mac "Whenever your device connects to your Mac over Wi-Fi, you can select it in the sidebar and sync it. (You can turn on automatic syncing if you want.)"
not sure if this works on the windows version of itunes or you need an actual mac. if not, you can set up a macos vm if you dont have a mac
Pay up
Nice thing is, with iCloud+ you get great benefits including custom domains for email
You can give a try to NextCloud or OwnCloud..
They have their own iOS app to do the backup in background but what you are backing up is limited compared to iCloud. It wont backup apps, app settings etc or your app related data like emails / sms etc.
Nextcloud or OwnCloud will only backup things like Files / Photos / Contact and calendar
I use combination of both. I do not backup heavy stuff, like Photo / Video / Files to iCloud. I use selfhosted Nextcloud for that, while allowing my free 5GB iCloud for stuff like Contact, messages, app settings etc. Those stuff takes up really low space and 5GB is more than enough for my Phone and Tablet
Thanks.
hmm nextcloud but can i backup my whatapp (exclude videos) is 2.7gb
if i change phone, can i restore my chat from nextcloud?
how about installed app settings, can i restore them on a new phone?
e.g. games i played without creating account where data stored locally.
alot of app can do backup for video and storage on the fly, but actually im asking for backup of entire phone for restoring and change new phone.
i think @naphtha and @emgh understand my question
If you want all of the ecosystem features, you gotta use iCloud.
Honestly though, iCloud, while often annoying, is so tightly integrated that it’s really worth the extra money.
Idrive (mini) has ~3USD / year for 100GB 1 device if i remember correctly
Pcloud-Lifetime Plan upto 10TB BF58%OFF
Pcloud have mobile app and can auto backup with your config folder
This.
All other solutions will be handicapped.
Use imazing free edition for automated daily iTunes backups, then backup those with borg/rsync/whatever to a vps. Anything else other than iTunes/iCloud backups can barely be called a backup (thanks apple)
I subscribed icloud in the end. Like some mention is the only way to have a full integrated backup with ios devices. Thanks everyone for review. Alot mention pcloud but my 1yr old idrivee2 is stable 1tb for $48. They sent email to increase from $30 last week due to raising infra cost
iCloud is worth every penny. Also very secure that Apple can’t read your data. Governments have struggled with this.
I paid for and spent a year, trying to find a good back up and realized it didn’t matter what I would self host and that I would not find anything as reliable for my mac ecosystem.
Also there's added value like vpn, email proxying, etc.
I had the same thought the other day after being notified that 50gb was almost all used up and 200gb for x2 the price is the next option. I've just turned off and deleted backups for now and had a long think about getting an Android again.
I read somewhere, recently, that the EU courts or whatever are after Apple again but this time for trapping people in the iCloud storage subscriptions by only giving people one convenient option. Here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20g50ny53eo
Also, the past week I've had to use the flashlight loads and the amount of times I've flicked it off because the homescreen activated the camera.....unreal. I can't be the only one.
