Oh then, it's better than I thought. BTW, any reason why you chose an 11500 over some server-specific CPU like the Xeon series? Pardon me for my curiosity. I recently got into home servers and OpenWrt, etc. So, I am curious.
I guess, for automating something, easiest would be Python. But it is personal preference. I would take Java just because of my experience with it
So, you looking for anything specifically.
I see, Python has been on my bucket list for quite a long time now. Guess, it's time to pick it up.
For anything below 150Eur (including shipping costs) its just VAT (21% in Lithuania), anything above takes same VAT + some more percentage depending on the type of the item. So PC would cost a lot to get hands on
The unique users during the NY 2024 was 987. Let's see if we can cross 1000 this time.
OK. I used to think you guys had it much better than us. But, I now know we are in boats too similar.
Well, it is more power efficient, easy to get hands on, my cooling solution is AIO CoolerMaster, so it is silent. Xeon will take more power and you will have difficulties to cool it silently
I am aiming for the iPad Mini for this purpose alone, so that I can have it shipped hoping for it to pass through customs unhindered. Or, have someone from US bring it for me. Anything bigger like the Gaming PC woudl be a hassle.
I see. I guess it was my misconception that Xeon or Server-specific CPUs were more power efficient than Desktop CPUs, since they are esp. made for that purpose.
I'm not sure if @dustinc would go an extra mile to make the dreams come true. There would be a possibility to get the item without import taxes - instead of sending the item from US to EU, if @dustinc would order the item on lets say Amazon DE, where the items are already in EU, with shipment address of the receiver, no additional costs would land on the prize winner. But... EU prices are a bit higher than US prices, so that would increase RN expenses.
That'd be very convenient for you. Let's hope for the best then.
I won a 1.5 GB Ryzen NVMe VPS last year, but I've been eyeing the new 2.5 GB KVM VPS, which seems to have some higher features (2 vCPU cores vs. 1 vCPU core, 40 GB storage vs. 30 GB, higher ram of course), and both are the same price. What are some example use cases where the Ryzen VPS would be better? I'm also wondering if the Intel VPS's SSD is NVMe too like the Ryzen's.
Thinking about which one to apply the ram upgrade to.
Server CPUs are made for DC, so you can hammer them 24/7 and have less fear of it to break. Also, Server CPUs support ECC memory, i5 on the other hand doesn't. But if you don't host anything mission critical where one bit can loose you millions, I don't see a problem with desktop hardware on my home server.
Think about the guy who wins the 2nd prize -https://www.amazon.com/Arcade1Up-PAC-Man-Deluxe-Arcade-Machine/dp/B0BYQNPTCF, esp. if they are non-US residents.
But, if they are collectors, I believe this is an item that'd only increase in value, for the retro thingy.
@dustinc this would be very nice , ofcourse if there are differences in price the winner should pay the difference
Thanks for clarifying. Right now, I have a "home server" with Jellyfin (Docker) and Samba, set on my Android box (Amlogic CPU). Please don't tease me, I am learning.
What was your configuration last year?
OMG!!! RACKNERD'S BLACK FRIDAY IS LIVE, GO HERE: https://www.racknerd.com/BlackFriday/ 💯
Party like the chef's already here. Make some noise for more GAs!
Is it on me to keep this party alive? Let's go!!! Miss FranZ!
Shipping and taxes would kill me
Amazon DE though...
Anyways, for this one, I don't have space for it to store, so I guess I would prefer taking the account credits
i had both, Ryzen and Intel. Loading wordpress was 2x-3x faster on ryzen + nvme.
for vpn or other stuff ssd and intel is sufficient.
For my small home server I am using Lenovo ThinkCentre m93p Tiny. i5-4570T, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD. It was cheap (like 100Eur 2 years ago, used), it basically doesn't use power.
So I would say it would be a great upgrade for your home server too. Just look into refurbished local stores, you might get something great there.
I have it running CyberPanel on AlmaLinux for a WordPress blog and a few static sites.
We are all here to party!
Damn! That difference. That'd cost me almost double of what you have in DE, if I were to buy it from Amazon India, given its available.
Thanks man. I believe I can find the same specs for that price or maybe lower in the local market if I look enough. But, it's the electricity prices that have me worried. That's why I am sticking to ARM for now.
Dustin, time for you to march in with a surprise GA!
