@yyds, contabo = big balloon where resources are like air, you have lot, but you can't really make use of it.

Never had contabo but lots of people I manage were customers of contabo, they would raise your limits as you comlain, then after few days they will again put limits (thinking you won't notice), you dont notice, its good, else if you again complain, they will pretend to migrate you to another server, it will work good for few days. Then again there will be limit, they hope this time you won't notice.

In the end, either you will leave them or you won't notice restrictions imposed as you are too busy in looking other things. But you get restricted so that they can cram more customers into same node.

    Thanked by 1n1njax
  • Contabo makes big claims

But when the server is delivered the user uncovers all the hidden shames

Support moves the customer to another node which fixes the problem or so the customer believes

Then the user reads LET and suddenly this crushes all their dreams

    Contabo is rubbish. The end

FWIW those disk numbers (4KB) roughly match what I see in a current benchmark on my @contabo_m VPS. (And No, I'm not happy with those numbers).

That said, where else do you get a 4 vCores, 8GB memory, 32 TB traffic VPS for about €5/month?

Yeah i advised my clients that use contabo to move away and most did move to hetzner, but theres still 2 which prefer contabo for some reason.

I had many issues with contabo, like high cpu steal, disks failing, random reboots etc.

    contabo is a headache!

Edit: I havent tried avoro yet, but looks good.

  • Yes the solution are move out from them or you Will get 10mb/sec disk io and 75% cpu steal.

If it's per month idk, why do you keep paying for this. Wink twice if you are held hostage.

  • I think some vps is under heavy stealing on peak hours, or when having a bad neighbor.
Both cpu and network will fluctuate depending on your luck.

Yes, it is per month. It was okay price for the specs in the beginning.
I'm hosting few websites (very low traffic) for my friends, few test applications (beta versions) etc. (I'm a dev, for real customer we use Azure mostly). To be honest, nothing important is on that VPS and everything is working fine. I didn't have time to find/buy another one and to move/set up everything again.
I found some free time (now) to find appropriate one or two VPS during the Black Friday deals and Contabo will be canceled soon

  • I've never had a single issue with Contabo... Because I've always completely avoided them like the plague.

  • Contabo is special. They limit your performance through massive cpu steal

  • In old ages, roundly 6 years ago,Contabo offered unbelieveable price which shocked the market, and its performance was just okay. But 6 years later the price didn't decrease any bit,and the performance is just like 6 years ago...

OK, after about 35 benchmark rounds, we get a clearer picture. 4KB/4t (seq writes) the avg is 7.8 MB/s and 2005 IOps. That's somewhat better than my first single run result but still not great at all. Plus, there is a large spread between a bit under 50% and slightly over 120% (relative to the avg). But even the occasional top numbers are nothing to write home about (9.6 MB/s and 2461 IOps).

That per se wouldn't shock me nor drive me away from @contabo_m - the comparison to what I saw about 3 years ago however does: 27 MB/s avg (38 MB top) and 6918 IOps (9774 top) that is, now I get a bit less than one third of what I saw when I got that VPS a few years ago!
That's a shame, Contabo! I get and accept that a VPS' performance can change somewhat depending on occupation, abuse rate, etc - but NOT SO DRASTICALLY!

I see two culprit candidates: One (of which I'm not sure but I seem to remember that) there were owner and/or management (-> and hence policy?) changes, but again, I'm not sure and might be wrong. And the other candidate is a, pardon my french, SHITTY MONITORING system - and/or sheer ignorance - and the result is what we see. To put it in linux terms: There's also disk IOps "steal" and it's brutally high.

Sorry Contabo, but you yourself did destroy the basis for recommending your VPS.

For my use case your VPS still is good enough and I'll very likely keep my three VPS but I see no basis for recommending you anymore; quite the contrary, I guess I'll stay mum when users bash you (within reasonable limits).
And don't you complain Contabo! After all what I just said is based on cold hard numbers reached by the same benchmark and method you once liked.

(side note: I highly likely could have done the "oh, it's just one bad node, we'll put you on another node" dance but I intentionally did not because I wanted to see what a plain average customer can expect. So, what I benchmarked to today is, to the best of my knowledge, just a bog standard Contabo node, the same one I benchmarked a few years ago)

  • Contabo is ok for low IO (low IOPS alone is clear evidence) or CPU needs but it is hit or miss. For 2 of my VPS, with low <5% for 1+ year. New test VPS from this month has 80% steal consistently .

I did a few days resource monitoring to see how much resources I really need for my hobby things. Currently I have there:

    • five wordpress production websites for friends companies (manual conf, nginx)
    • gitlab instance
    • docker
    • few test applications (testing before production) etc.

I have low traffic for everything and increase of the traffic is not expected for this VPS.
VPS config: 4core, 8GB ram, 200GB SSD, 200mbit links... Located in Düsseldorf. (yabs posted above)

    CPU status:

    RAM status:

CPU is not over 25%, RAM is at about 60%, disk 22%... I never had any problem last 4-5 years with Contabo to be honest.

Conclusion: This amount of resources are not needed. Paying for them €72/year now.
Collected a new Black Friday offer (not contabo) with lower resources and 12€/year which will definitely be enough for me. Some cost reduce.

Oh my gosh, is this true? Are there any other cases I can refer to? Because I just paid them a few hundred dollars. :s
