Does Hetzner limit the TDP on dedicated servers?

Hi,

I have read some post about Hetzner limiting/underclocking the TDP/CPU.
Does anyone have latest info about this rumor anno 2024 ?

Generally, just look at the Geekbench results and compare to the "normal" result of said CPU. Most are the same/similar but AX102, for example, is from my limited digging clearly lagging behind.

Doesn't one get ILO access with a dedi there?

Hetzner is big enough to have their "own" versions of motherboards from manufacturer(s) so even with ILO you can be out of luck.

They have own BIOS version with overclocking tabs grayed out on servers with LGA1700/AM5. On EX44 you cannot even enable MBR support, because they blocked everything apart from essentials.

On Windows you can increase the PPT by using Ryzen Master which talks correctly to CPU and increase the power consumption, but I'm not sure if it will work longterm. If they monitor power usage from outlets then if all AX102's use maximum of 166W and your will be 240W+ then they may terminate your server or block the account, as their profit shrink and also motherboard may not be suited to deliver that much power.

  • That is very close to being a scam or fraud if they do it and don't even mention it on their website

not really. they offer a certain cpu type, that is all. indeed they do not mention any bios configuration. but with that they also do not promise or offer any kind of specific performance. all that is left is a personal assumption or expectation that you interpret into the sole name/type given.

consider RAM in comparison: just because someone offers DDR5 you still cannot expect the highest frequency available on the market build into the box. if it is not mentioned, you should consider the offer fulfilled if it is DDR5. no matter the frequency.

on top it's billed by the hour, so you can easi

  • Why they would if they already provided you with the actual cpu why they need to limit it? To save electricity? Or maximize its lifespan? Maybe but they would be risking their trustworthiness by doing so.

probably both. also you have to get that kind of heat out of that flat box. it's not like these servers have lot's of spare room that you can easily push some air through and liquid cooling is it's own pandora box.

PS: highly likely a more common scenario amongst providers. not just Hetzner. they probably just perfected in a way, that the users can't easily change it.

Yes cooling is a good point too.

    1. Reflash BIOS.
    2. Change settings.
    3. Enjoy.
    4. Follow this guide for free server.

Not that I needed (yet another) reason to stay away from them, nut now I got one more ...

They've done it with their "unlimited" traffic before. A while ago they told some of their clients maxxing out their bandwidth 24/7 to reduce it or their servers will be cancelled.

To this day, they still list the traffic as "unlimited" with no fair use policy.
