RoyaleHosting from Equinix AM5 to Digital Realty AMS5

We are writing to inform you of a significant infrastructure upgrade that will be taking place in January 2025. This transition is aimed at enhancing our service reliability, performance, and security.

To accommodate our growing customer base and optimize our operations, we will be migrating our main data center in Amsterdam from Equinix AM5 to Digital Realty AMS5. This move is necessitated by the limitations of Equinix AM5, such as restricted space and power capacity.

By consolidating our operations at Digital Realty, we will be able to:
Offer greater control over hardware positioning and layout with our custom-designed cage, resulting in improved cooling efficiency and layout optimization.
We will be implementing improved security measures due to our full control of the cage.
Digital Realty will enable us to provide quicker service provisioning, better meeting the needs of our expanding customer base.
Additionally, this consolidation will lead to more efficient cost management, allowing us to continue offering competitive pricing while maintaining high-quality services.

In addition to the infrastructure migration, we will also be implementing several enhancements to our network stack, including:
Automating manual processes streamlining deployment processes and improving provision duration of orders.
Upgrading all transit ports to 400G technology, with multi-terabit capacity to all transit providers, expanding our network and mitigation capacity.
Introducing our new additional transit provider Orange.
We will be upgrading our current network hardware with newer, more efficient choices.
Installing additional DDoS mitigation systems and capacity to further enhance our network mitigation layer (allowing for the release of the application shield).

We understand that this information may be concerning, and we want to assure you that our team is working diligently to minimize any disruption to your services. You will receive a follow-up email on November 1st with the exact dates and a breakdown of the migration with any potential impacts on your services.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, feel free to reach out to us so we can provide support.

Sincerely,
The RoyaleHosting Team

Opinions? Being at Equinix and their DDoS offer were the main reasons for choosing them. I am open minded but not sure about this.

same. would like to hear opinions from the community about this new planned datacentre

  • These guys will need to build their own datacenter in the coming years

DigitalRealty is Interxion, so not bad, but honestly, this move is a lot of work and you don't do that within a few days.

All cross connects have to be migrated, so many one time charges..

And customers that are connected via Equinix AM5, do they need to connect via DigitalRealty then?

Isn't this the 5th datacenter move for RoyaleHosting? Previous moves weren’t exactly out of luxury.

Makes you wonder what the real reason is this time… 🙂 Severius, Cellnex, SmartDC, Equinix, and now Digital Realty? Correct me if the list is wrong or even longer..

Thank you for helping share our announcement!

We are transitioning away from Equinix AM5 due to regulatory changes that have restricted the availability of power and rack space within Equinix’s southeast campus in the Netherlands. These limitations were first communicated by Equinix in May 2024. Since then, we have engaged in numerous discussions to explore expansion possibilities at AM5, initially managing through pre-purchased power reserves to avoid potential disruptions. However, after extended efforts and waiting for updates, Equinix confirmed in September 2024 that further power expansion at AM5 would be unfeasible for the foreseeable future.

With our continued growth and commitment to reliable expansion capabilities for our customers, we sought an alternative data center provider that could support our requirements. After extensive evaluations, Digital Realty emerged as the ideal solution. Digital Realty has 85MW of power capacity available at their Shiphol campus, conveniently situated outside Amsterdam's regulatory jurisdiction.

We began planning this migration promptly to ensure that customer operations and future growth were uninterrupted. Digital Realty is building a custom cage tailored to our specifications, allowing a seamless transfer of our physical racks from Equinix AM5 to Digital Realty AMS5 without the need to disassemble equipment, which will significantly reduce migration time and complexity.

To minimize the impact of this migration, we have begun setting up a secondary network core at Digital Realty AMS17. Our current transit providers have collaborated to establish 400G connections at this location, and the new network stack is designed to integrate smoothly with our existing configurations, eliminating the need for major adjustments. Furthermore, the migration will be managed by a company specializing in datacenter migrations to ensure a seamless transition.

Additionally, this move enables us to implement 400G readiness across our entire network, which enhances scalability and positions us to expand our mitigation systems and provider connections with minimal impact on the production network.

It’s important to note that this decision was made through extensive discussions with Equinix, and while Equinix AM5 no longer meets our needs for expansion, our experience with them has been highly positive. We will continue to maintain our equipment at other Equinix facilities in regions unaffected by these power constraints.

Prior to this announcement, we discussed the migration with transit customers connected at Equinix AM5 and provided them with a seamless pathway to move to Digital Realty AMS17 (or Nikhef). With our dual-network setup, these customers have the option to transition early without any downtime. Additionally, we have a comprehensive migration plan in place for all existing customers to ensure a smooth transition for everyone involved.

We hope this addresses the reasoning behind our decision and reassures our customers of our commitment to maintaining service continuity and network stability during this transition.

    400G 7usd/yr VPS when?

It's simple, they 'forgot' to pay the bills again. Like they did at Serverius, Dataplace e.t.c. just give the DC a call asking about RoyaleHosting and they'll laugh in your face.

All outstanding invoices with Equinix have been paid in full and we maintain a positive, ongoing relationship with Equinix. This migration is due solely to regulatory restrictions affecting power availability at AM5, which limits our expansion capacity. We will continue to use Equinix facilities in other locations where these constraints are not an issue.

400G VPS for $7 a year? If we could bend the laws of physics (and accounting), we’d be all over it! For now, though, we’ll stick to offering the best performance we can without breaking the bank—or reality. 😄

Well, congrats on managing to leave your first data center without any overdue bills. Meanwhile, my racks at Equinix NL (and partners who also have racks) have never had any of these so-called "power issues." They’re way ahead, with fresh contracts in place to handle all the demand. So, be honest. Why are you exactly leaving? Like @jordynegen11 mentioned it always happens out of nothing.

    Yeah, not with that attitude.

$14 then, take it or leave it. The offer's good for 24 hours.

  • Digital Realty is actually better than Equinix in many ways. Congratulations on the improvement!

  • I was reading this "Digital Realty has made strategic investments in Europe, including the acquisition of eight data centers from Equinix in 2016" so I feel a bit more confident.

Here’s a screenshot of our communication in May with Equinix about the power limitations at AM5 (we’ve just blanked out some personal details for privacy). Hopefully, this clears things up!
