12TB storage [RAID]

I am looking for a dedicated server or VDS [not CPU/Memory Cap] with following requirement -->

CPU - 4-8
Memory - 12 - 16 GB
Storage - 12 TB [RAID 5 / 10]
Speed - 1G [no fair share etc, kind of dedicated]
Transfer - 20TB / Month
Location - Netherland / Finland

Budget - 240 dollars max i can pay. I am ok to commit for a year service if performance is good. But before committing to a year, I want to check performance first on my own.

Really appreciate if someone can guide me where i should look for, or has some offers. I tried on my own to reach few vendors, but havent received any good offers so far. Thanks in advance.

When it's about storage VMs I usually just look at @host_c. Incredible bang per buck ratio and good quality too.
But as you want NL or FI, maybe @LiteServer (NL) has something for you. In FI I don't know any interesting provider (and also am disinterested).
In DE there might be some but the problem is that that country seems to increasingly go Gestapo.

NL might be the best choice in Europe.

  • I am looking for root access on server. The storage VPS doesnt have root and has lot of limitations. So i have to purchase storage and on top VPS/VDS which increase cost.
    So, still looking. Thanks.

  • For raw storage it's possible, but also 1G dedicate? Definitely not.
Your best choice is go find OVH SYS-2-SAT-32, but I doubt anyone will release.

Oh wow... Thats really good. I have from pulsedmedia and thats the one thing that i didnt got :( So i thought that its same for every provider. My bad. Thanks for guiding me, it seems no brainer then. I will wait for host_c if they can offer me something in that case.

@host_c is the best value for storage vps.

@hosthatch storage VPS has 10gig data port and is an excellent option, especially if the storage VPS is linked with compute VPS using private networking between them.

Maybe a misunderstanding. What does 'root' mean? In case you take it to mean physical access (e.g. via IPMI) to the node (the physical machine), you are right. VM providers of course don't provide that.
But if one takes 'root' to mean full access to one's system (in that case a VM), incl. partitioning (and formatting) drives to one's liking and some access similar to IPMI (albeit it to a VM) then you are wrong.

Now, the question is, whether - and why/what for - you feel the need to have a full physical machine (aka. 'dedi'). For some (rather few) cases that might be or at least seem necessary, but keep in mind that a VM can be almost as safe as a dedi, incl. encrypted drives etc., modulo obviously shared CPU and memory. I think for most cases that's good enough.

But if you really feel to need a dedi that shouldn't be a problem with your budget, especially if you have a friendly provider who has no qualms about you sending in some drives and sliding them into your server. If there's a problem then probably that 4 - 8 cores is a bit one the low side nowadays and often not even available anymore *g

Nope. Root means that i am able to install the software and GUI of the OS that i want. What i got from other provider is jail shell where I am restricted and not able to sudo etc. Meaning that for operations which required elevated priv for software installation it will not work. So, in my case even a dedicated virtual machine will work like VDS or physical machine is going to work anyhow. But thats what I meant with root access.

Thats exactly I want...... I cant ask for anything more. I have storage from pulsedmedia and i am not allowed to install anything apart from some pre-build software made available. Its good for some use cases and the performance is really good but not the use case I am looking for. So host_c with discounts, i think will be perfect fit.

Then I'm afraid I can't help you, because while I do installs as root I never install a GUI. But @dev_vps does and he showed that it can be done.

Doubt he can handle this at all.....

  • i use windows core for Hyper-V hosts only :) apart from that i dont see it has any utility as Hyper-V manager or servermanager can be used for managing at the end. I will go for ubuntu or any other linux distro in comparison which has good command support. Powershell is good, but windows in general is not all cli stuff. Softwares that are made are almost exclusive for GUI most of the times. But thats all my views, i know people can do much much more with windows shell etc. Not debating at all.

At work, we use powershell to generate a security access report by querying 1000+ servers

No dedi is not a absolute requirement. Its only that i need root access. As updated above some providers storage boxes are very restricted and I can understand why it is so. Thats how they can provide cheap offering. But its good for some use-case and not for others.
