We plan to allow the users to be able to upgrade them as they wish from our control panel. In the meantime, we'll release our VDS at 5000 IOPS (which will also have dedicated CPU resources) and we plan to make this upgradable.
Based on statistics we've seen that the average VPS needs 100-1000 IOPS (that's why we set the max 1000 IOPS in our VPS line).
However, there are other case where more IOPS are needed, mostly on large / busy databases*, so our VDS would be the best for that use case with 5000 IOPS plus the ability to upgrade.
In the end, we want to add all this functionality in our Control Panel and give the ability to the customers to make any changes on the fly as they need.
*1) Many busy Databases, with proper memory caching can cope very well with 1000 IOPS. *2) Others use in memory Databases for maximum performance, since even the fastest disk can't beat RAM in transactional performance.
