I read the thread out of curiosity and I am confused. Several people have reported that they had to use the same password to access their servers. How is that not a red flag? I am surprised to see that many orders, if they are all real.

Congrats to @MassiveGRID though, the first offer is definitely a shocker

I think you mean to ssh? Yeah they give a default pw for root, but on first login there's a prompt already to change it.. i don't see any issue.

Really? For a sub 0.50/mo offer when paid every 4 years WITH an IPv4?

Surprised due to the password issue, regardless of the price

Why would anyone care that much?

Just imagine a customer buying the server now, to grab the offer, but use it tomorrow or one week for now, while that password is used by abusers to scan their ASN, compromising customer's server.

in that case customer will be locked out anyway.. due to new password.. still no issues :)

I'm sure that for a one-time fee of $50 an arrangement can be made that would provide you with a unique password for only you.
Btw, the same applies to an IP4 for only you, albeit for a slightly higher fee of $300. But of course you can also use the same IP4 we all share.

Yes, but if you're scared of this, you change it immediately. And if you're not scared of it, it won't stop you from buying.

And if you're really scared, you'd install from ISO.

I honestly don't see why so many people would be stopped from buying because of it.

Obviously, it's a bad practise anyway.

At these prices who's gonna implement a password generator 🤣.

But I would have thought that's its secure anyway? As linux doesn't allow to reuse same password..

The issue is if the buyer doesn't log in for x amount of time, someone can easily gain access, knowing their IP ranges and the default password.

yes, that's why it will lock the user out (because of thirdparty pw change, pw change is mandatory on first login), and raise a red flag..

Is there a timeout on the password change? Could an attacker enter the correct temporary current password, but wait hours or days with the connection open to enter the new password?

Or alternatively gain access, install something nefarious, erase logs, then change the password back to letmein (or whatever it is) and set it again to require a password change on login

    🤣

I'm not an expect... but depending on the case either the user or the thirdparty will get wrong password..

then change the password back to letmein (or whatever it is) and set it again to require a password change on login

you cant reuse the same password..

So far I did not buy the offer not because I am scared of passwords. I would rather install manually the operating system anyway. I like to partition things myself.

What puts me off is the price + recession + 4 years. I would gladly grab it and pay that price annually, then accept a PayPal agreement for automatic renewal and make sure not to lose it, not even from my cold dead hand.

But the provider wants a 4 years contract. I barely have a few servers which lasted 4 years. Many companies closed in the last 4 years and even popular providers ended their business in the last 4 years on LET (from HostSolutions to NexusBytes).

If we remember: about 4 years ago Covid19 started to create chaos. 2 years ago a hot war in Europe started which still has no end in sight because nobody discusses about true peace or about organizing negotiations. 1 year ago a hot war in Middle East started which also has no end in sight due to its strong and long religious background. All of this is also fueled by European Union which should be an economic alliance for peace and where this provider has operations. With all this in mind, I can not possibly believe that in the next 4 years everything will be back to normal. I consider myself a dreamer, but I don't want to consider myself delusional (at least not yet).

Do you remember @emgh I was a sucker for lifetimes? Not anymore. Wherever I see lifetimes, my hair starts to raise up my spine, just like a cat does.

  • @MassiveGRID said: I believe it varies a lot if you compare 1 vCore (which is 1 thread on XEON) with 2 vCores or 4 vCores which a full 1 or 2 XEON Cores.

Yeah I do a lot of benchmarking and it just seemed to be half of what I can usually pull from a single vCPU of the same model Intel Gold.

Seems to be just very good limiting at machine level, which is good if it's the case. Slowly GB6 scores can degrade over time, but if it stays 500-ish, that's just fine.

Went ahead and got a 3 (4 year) as I've purchased CloudAtCost in the past just to watch how that went. Plus I've been at NY2 often for work and live nearby, so it's a favorite data center of mine and 20TB is great for VPN usage.

    Best of luck with sales!

root partition + home partition + swap area.

I am greedy and leave as little as possible for root, just enough for usage and future upgrade, depending on usage.

Home partition is for my data. If I fill it completely, I do not want it to impact the running of OS, which is why I keep it separately.

Swap is separate mostly for crashes (we're working with low-end providers here). If the offer comes with very low disk space, I configure swap as swapfile in root filesystem so I may remove it if needed for emergency space.

Thanks. So i have one vps from hostbrr. 8gb ssd and 2.5tb storage hdd. When I did auto partitioning the installer combined both ssd and hdd to come up with the root partition. How would you handle something in this scenario?

Depends on what you run on it. If you want to run some desktop, I would run the root partition on the SSD to make it snappy. Some 1GB or 2GB Swapfile would be on it too, depending on desktop size + applications needed. I like LXDE because it is light; but LXQT and XFCE are also light.

HDD would have the home partition with all the data to download everything onto it. Now because in 2.5 TB I can fit a lot of Linux ISO, I would also encrypt it, either at OS level or using some program like Veracrypt (for a huge partition file). The purpose of this is for provider not to take a peek at your stash of Linux ISO, not that I don't trust the provider (Hostbrr in this case), but because nobody enjoys your stash more than you do.

Again: it depends on what you wish to achieve and what you wish to run. For very large SQL databases the setup would be different, like just /var on SSD. It all depends what you run in there.
