Unfortunately system crashed ubuntu 18.04.

Hello, unfortunately my system crashed ubuntu 18.04.
What could be wrong? ssd/ram?
All of a sudden everything shuts down, only ssh works and whatever I do it says an error, but I sent it to reboot and the system didn't come up.
Errors that were:
login:
bash: /etc/bash.bashrc: Input/output error
bash: /root/.bashrc: Input/output error

root@byen:/home/byen# sudo fsck -f /dev/sda4
Bus error
root@byen:/home/byen# sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda
Bus error
root@byen:/home/byen# apt update
bash: /usr/bin/apt: Input/output error
root@byen:/home/byen# mc
bash: /usr/bin/mc: Input/output error

and reboot
root@byen:/home/byen# reboot
Failed to set wall message, ignoring: Message recipient disconnected from message
Failed to reboot system via login: Message recipient disconnected from message
Failed to open /dev/initctl: Permission denied
Failed to talk to init daemon
But restarted, no system came up, now I'm waiting for ipmi.
What do you think could be the problem?
SSD or RAM?
can it be fixed without reinstalling?

It can be SSD failure or RAM issues, If the SSD or RAM has issues, it could result in filesystem corruption. It’s possible the system isn’t able to access critical parts of the operating system because those areas have become unreadable. Have you checked the logs?

How are you triggering the reboot? Your errors look suspiciously like the issue discussed here, so maybe you're not using "sudo" to reboot?

Also, it's probably worth triggering the reboot from the Providers panel, (assuming you have one), but I suspect the errors you've pasted here are related to the rebooting and not the error you saw before...and that's what we'd need to see to help you diagnose your core problem.

You will need to have your provider swap the SSD for a new one in that case.

Alternatively you can ask them to re-seat the SSD (preferably another port if available), I've seen that solve such issues before.

I got a new SSD, the old one died, but they can't do anything with it, because of my data they will send it in a package by dhl if necessary. they are very kind.

If the data is really important, you can ask to send drive to you and then bring/send it to data recover company near you. But this can cost a lot - from few hundreds to few k.

Ubuntu 18.04 is EOL and has been hacked.
Get new SSD and install Ubuntu 24.04.

    Hi,

intenso ( i guess you mean that by writing "inteso" ) is even for desktop class hardware very low cost.

I suggest you to check what hardware you are actually renting ( if your data is important for you ). Alternatively you should fall in love with S.M.A.R.T monitoring and backups.
