Email hosting with contacts, calendars and good spam filtering
I am currently using a web hosting package from Hetzner for the email hosting for my personal domains. It works super well apart from the number of false positives and false negatives I get due to their spam filtering.
Often legitimate emails end up in spam or the opposite happens.
Besides, since I use Hetzner for various other things I'd like to keep email separate rather than having too many eggs in one basket.
Is there a decent provider that
- is not too expensive (it's for personal stuff)
- has native calendars and contacts support via CalDAV, CardDAV, apart from IMAP for email
- importantly, has a very good spam filtering

I suspect people will recommend @jar . I am personally self-hosting but I do not think this is good for your case. A friend of mine is very happy with Zohomail (and it is cheap).
MangoMail or Zoho
MXRoute doesn't have proper calendar and contacts without hacks if I remember correctly from when I used it for a short time a while ago. I can't use Zoho because it's very sensitive to frequent changes of location and can sometimes lock the account requiring you to unlock it, thinking that the changes of locations are due to the account being hacked. I used Zoho for a while a couple of years and and had to switch away because this was causing me headaches. When I am hacking for bug bounties I often switch from a location to another with the VPN, so this was a problem with Zoho.
Checking MangoMail now. I have never heard of it before, is it a new player?
MangoMail doesn't seem to have calendar.

I was looking at Mailbox.org a few mins ago. Sounds like a good candidate. Do you have experience with them?

These days most of the projects, apps, and tools go the Nero Burning ROM and ACDsee way, i.e. turn themselves into a heavy monsters ("suites") with a gazillion of unrelated bells and whistles.
There are a lot of people, including myself, who want just email, light and fast, nothing else.
Good for you. For me email, contacts and calendar go hand in hand.

Only paid email services I use are MXRoute and ProtonMail.
I use protonmail currently for my personal email and I enjoy their calendar setup. I'd say put it on your list of things to consider or look more into.
Yes, I like it very much. In my opinion, it's the best email service I've ever tried, and I've tried many. Direct competition to Proton, Tuta and Runbox.
I have the €30/year package for the last two years and half or something and really enjoy it.
Recently, I topped it up for the next few years, as I really don't enjoy mail migrations, and this one seems like a keeper.
It also comes with some cloud storage, Etherpad, Tasks and numerous little extras included.
Of course, I had to discover than inbox.eu doesn't support CardDav after paying for one year. I am lucky as usual. So I ended up using Nextcloud for calendar and contacts (since I use Hetzner's Storage Share for that). So a bit annoyed because at this point I could have gone with MXRoute but it is what it is. I am just hoping that the spam filtering works better than Hetzner's, because that's the main reason for the switch.
I was happy though with the fast import of the mailboxes from Hetzner. They just use simple imapsync, but automated so it was handy. It's all done already and I am gonna cancel with Hetzner next.
It was close between Mailbox.org and Inbox.eu for me, I went with inbox.eu because of the better pricing because I didn't know about the problem with CardDav. If inbox.eu doesn't satisfy me then I will try Mailbox.org.

Another feature I find very useful is the ability to create disposable email addresses that last for 30 days (they can be deleted or extended for another 30 days at any time).
There's a decent level of control over the spam filters.

They're all good in their own ways. Check them all out and see what fits your personal needs and budget. I can recommend all of them for different reasons. YMMV.
If you have specific privacy or encryption needs, your list will be different than someone who just wants cheap basic email with CalDAV, which will be different than someone who wants a great iOS app, for example. Make a list of exactly what you want and check each of those services out, and one of them will likely fit you pretty well.
And yes, it is wise to separate your hosting from your email. I would absolutely not be using Hetzer for email.

Mailbox.org is good. I have not used them directly, but I have heard nothing but good opinions about them from multiple friends who do.
