Plex server no acess even local
Okay, how to say I am a noob without saying I am a noob.. 🥲
My set up:
VPS win serv 22 - spec doesn't matter
No firewall rules set or whatsoever ALL possible imaginable ports open 🔓
I installed plex server on a dumb azure vm. No problem.
Then i tried to transfer it to my new vps. problem.
I got the acces denied after the installation. EVEN IN LOCAL
Fine.
Transfert the data, delete the server on the old vm, even delete registery because i am a noob and that's what noob do.
Then, not working.
delete everything on the new vm, software, data, cache of the browser, registery, reinstall. do that a couple of time and start to consider jellyfin.
Then i realized i don't even have local access. No fking local access. So there is something i must really do wrong. At that point it's more educational that practical. I don't understand and I tried everything possible. I am also surprised that it seems to not be something common as google is not my friend on this one.
So I deleted everything again, created new account by safety just for making sure the new server is clean. Same problem. Again.
all port open, no fireeall rules.
What am I doing wrong, help !!!

You should look into just whitelisting the IP you're going to use to access the server. Typically frowned upon to have a Windows machine wide open.
You might want to consider making that jump before even bothering with Plex. You'll inevitably end up using Jellyfin - coming from someone who used Plex before it was called Plex and have a lifetime pass.
Also, Plex on Azure...any reason for Azure over somewhere else? Microsoft is pretty big with DMCA and copyrights and given Hetzner gave Plex some slack - wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft had something in place as well.
Is the new server authorized with your Plex account ? If not, did you attempt to authorize it from the host itself ? Either thru vnc or ssh port forwarding ?

FK it bro baylife
It's not possible to open everything to an Azure VM, the VM itself doesn't have a public IP. You probably haven't opened anything in the network security group in the Azure firewall.
Noted on that ! Thanks !
Okay honestly speaking it was because it was the most available VM for me atm. And I can confirm i encountered a ban on it for a really tiny server after only a couple of weeks about 1 year ago when i started experimenting with them. I guess I didn't learned my lesson well. Totally agree with your insinuation here. Regarding Hetzner, honestly I am considering since my fees start to be up. I am about 50 euros months for personal VPS (s) giving myself the escuse it savent me on cloud/netflix/spotify subscription, but man... i am bad at maths.. particularly that i live in PH and here i cost a penny for each. I guess i just really like to understand how things works.
For Jellyfin, noted and I have the feeling you are right. So now even if I fix my plex, f it, i will go Jelly. One should learn to listen the answer when he asks for help.
Over all, thanks for your answer, I really appreciate it.
I saw that before and that's why i transfered the plex data to the nex vm. Since i lost access to the old VM server (dumb me deleted it first). So i am stuck here. But seem it is not the issue since even a new server coudn't be opened on local (am i wrong, did i missunderstand you ??)
O no the Azure is my old VM where the original plex was. My new VM is far far away from azure that I never considered as a long term option. And yep you totally right, i am default set up with azure firewall.
Or do i missunderstand and do you mean the issue is caused becasue of that on my new VM ? But then why a new server acc encounter the same difficulty
Going back on you and the link you provided. It's helping. A lot. Thanks.
the other comments about windows are probably right. I dont use windows so cant comment there. If you tried http://localhost:32400 from the vm running plex, and nothing came up, then my comment is not relevant.
regarding Jellyfin, does your spying or smart tvs have an app for jellyfin? . Is that important to you ? It is nice to run plex without hooking a computer to the TV. I did see that jellyfin has a fairly good app infrastructure

Just drop that plex bloat and go take some Jello'!
@naas1201
As I recall on Windows, first time you log in you have to link the server to your plex account.
In that windows server, open a browser and go to:
https://127.0.0.1:32400/manage ( google it, I do not recall exactly )
This
in tandem with this
Sounds like the overall issue.
If you open up port 32400 on your firewall (Necessary Plex Port) and on your Azure VM, use RDP/VNC to use a browser on the VM and visit
https://localhost:32400/web/index.html
That (should) bring you to the Plex configuration where you "claim" your server and finalize configuration
One that's done, you should be able to visit your plex install - https://ipaddressgoeshere:32400/web - on your home computer and you should be good to go.
But honestly, look into Jellyfin a bit more before you make a decision, promise you won't regret it.
The easiest way to make Plex work is by generating a claim code and using it to claim the server after installation. Swizzin uses this method and it works fine. Tweak it a bit to create a standalone script or maybe one exists already. The “local access” method via browser/SSH tunnel isn’t working anymore (almost all tutorials online use this method). I tested servers from 3-4 providers and the results are always same.
Worked for me within the last couple months. YMMV
Downloaded it and ready to deploy. I started this to fix my problem, and I did already by taking the decision to switch to Jello. Now my only goal is to understand, fix it, and delete Plexo.
I tried localhost, plex tutorial and the 3 methodes of https://www.plexopedia.com/plex-media-server/general/claim-server/ - none working
Jello in the download drive. Fixing plex first and delete it for Jello. Just educational at that point.
Indeed you must be right. and here that make sense. Azure doesn't basically provide IP, but i was able to find it anyway. Still not working so i guessed it's my azure port restriction. I opened it. Still not worked (plex impose 32400) so i guess it's blocked somewhere.
Jello on the way
MOST USEFUL comment. Totally right. I tried plex and custom claim (the 3 methodes) and none are working.
That actually make me think of apple practice. Obviously something is wrong from plex here, surely for "security purpose" (hi apple) or just because "why not".
So to resume:
No acess to server in local in new VPS.
No distant acess at all (that one make sense since my original host is azure and it's not very public web friendly)
I re downloaded plex server on azure host and could UNCLAIM the server. (i tried first to connect it to the internet, but coudn't make it work) I naively though it would be easy then to claim it on the new vps. WRONG
Nevermind, tried manual, semi auto and automatic API, token claim. SUCESSFULLY
The system works.
I changed the credential for the correct one in the registerery and.... NOT WORKING
I noted the https://github.com/swizzin/swizzin/blob/master/scripts/install/plex.sh script. But at that point honestly I am not willing to try that as I understand it and even if it works I am not willing to commit to a company that require this extreme solution to swtich a server ownership. I made the mistake younger to commit to this kind of company (apple) and I ended up fcked by it, I am learning from my mistakes.
Overall you all guys recommend me Jello, and everything I try gives you right. So I will start installing it now.
I might bother you again in the future with a convo title like "What's your best Jello setup" sorry in advance about that !!!
Thanks overall for your support and care ! Much appreciated
You're very welcome! And make sure you're looking for "Jellyfin" and not Jello
Plex claim update not working.
1. First, you’ll want to open Putty and enter your Server IP and Port
2. Next click on Connection, then SSH, and finally Tunnels. Fill in the Source Port as 32400 and the destination as either your domain.com:32400 or IP:32400. Then all you need to do is click Add
Now all you need to do is select Open to start the tunnel.
Now, you’ll need to open your browser and input localhost:32400/web/index.html into the Navigation Bar and hit enter.
This will take you to a login screen, simply login with your Plex Account here.
Thanks ! Actually I was trying that earlier, and my guess is that it wasn't working because [except that i am a noob] azure VMs with basic configs are kinda hidden from public internet. [as pointed out here by an other user]
Btw I wonder why i don't have an assigned IP on azure but a basic whats my ip with my azure vm found one ?? (what's the trick here??) //
Unfortunately, I give up.
The reason I give up is that i identified the problem and the resources needed to it resolution aren't worth it.
As you point out, my main problem is to link this server to my new VM. (by putty here) // So for that i need to configure my azure VM to be reachable. And then voila. It should be solved. But that machine man, it's slow, it's dumb, it's... educational, but yeah, not costing a direct penny.
Overall thank a lot for reaching out and pointing what I believe is the problem, it confirms my conclusion.
Downloaded it today. Man it's so much easier !! My google history is already full of "what's the best plugging for Jellyfin" and yes, google seem reluctant with the term "jello" bing seem perverse on it. [joking]
Happy to hear it!
Be careful with plugins! They can be malicious and you don't want to break your new server now that you've got it running
Without knowing what you are doing (and trying to accomplish) it is hard to tell you.
Azure also has a network level firewall, not just the local firewall on the VM.
Okay I solved it. Or more exactly @nszerver found the solution for me. - I let that here in case of someone ever need the solution (courtesy of nszerver )
