If you put EPYC I will switch immediately

That wouldn't give you a significant performance boost and possibly you'd even see lower performance, depending on the Epyc model. I'm an AMD fan myself but let's be realistic, those Xeons (used by @host_c) are roughly in the same league.
Anyway, processor performance already was/is plenty good enough for a storage server, even with the E5 v4.

@dev_vps and @jsg - as you kinda benchmark stuff around here.

We did some tests on the new nodes today.

This is a YABS + TOP so we can measure CPU steal ( if any ), we are quite sensitive to that :)

Sorry, I don't comment on yabs and geekbench and certainly not on Windows performance but there are others here (incl. the one you addressed) who seem to be Windows-geeks.

All I can say is that I did my benchmark (plus quite a few runs since ...) and the result was clear: your storage nodes are good stuff, really and even on par with way more expensive ones from other (very well reputed) providers (like e.g. LS). My review is available to anyone interested here.
    https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/198069/3-5-storage-vps-comparison-nl-it-ro-incl-host-c

If you want I'll benchmark an E5 v4 based VPS too if you provide me with access for 3 - 7 days, but frankly, I wouldn't expect significant differences in performance (but if you want I'd benchmark it anyway).

Generally I'll put it almost brutally clearly: guys those storage promo VPSs are the cheapest ones I know of (in terms of performance and size for the money) and IMO still would be a real bargain if they were E5 v3 based! I just don't see why one would ask for more performance. What I can understand is that e.g. video streamers might want more, but for that the solutions is simple: get a VPS with more vCores and memory and maybe (just a wild guess) host_c would, given enough serious requests coming in, be ready to create an additional "special" node just for them with say, more and possibly even faster cores and mem. and possibly even GPU access -or- a performance - not storage! - node with a fast NVMe and a fat internal network link to a storage node or somesuch.

For normal storage the promo VPS offered here IMO are good quality, good performance and ridiculously low price. I see absolutely no basis for complaining or debating about this or that processor model being a bit faster.

Totally agree with @jsg observations and comments.

if I have to keep only one VPS, it would be @host_c storage VPS

i totally agree. i have a larger dyson vps and have used it quite heavily the last few weeks (sorry!), and it's been so reliable and performant whether idling or under load.

i cannot recommend @host_c enough, and if I had to keep only one vps it would definitely be this one.

    Thanked by 1host_c
  • Whoever is idling one of these for no reason, DM me for transfer, I need it for backups so it will get good but non abusive use.

@host_c any chance there are some more plans available?
Even if it was without an IPV4 address. I'm looking for a storage server, or even just an account with space on a server. As I already have one of your IPV6 only VPS's.

They will eventually, likely they manually change it every month or so, just like https://check-host.net

You still have 2 subnets with wrong geofeed url/no geofeed url, it should be fine since it's your own org, and you have it correctly on 1 of them, but just FYI.

They have it correctly on one of their subnets, and since the rest are on the same ORG, most geoip databases accept them

ping.pe uses Maxmind and Maxmind already grabbed the correct data, it's a matter of time until they manually update their geodb file. See here

  • No real need for geofeed in RIPE DB when "country" is set. Or what would be the benefit from geofeed?

  • how late am I for such an incredible deal? dang it

so after some testing/feedback/changes i can now state that @host_c made every other storage server i have redundant

i decided to combine my 6x 10TB deals into one VPS and even if i paid twice what i pay right now, no other provider even comes close on price/performance

@host_c even put quite a bit of troubleshooting time into ensuring my very non-standard spec was performing as it should, thanks so much for this!

yabs will come once the box is done populating and checksum verification completes, but you need only look at the previous dozen yabs i posted about this deal to know what its about

    Thanked by 1host_c
