Why is the internet bad in China?
Ever byte passed in and out Mainland China are filtered by the government firewall, network capbility is limited. And China is a country with 1.4 billion people, the traffic is congested.
So they can only promise traffic through national ISPs (China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile) have the highest priority.
If providers dont buy direct IX with these 3 ISPs, their traffic will be extremely slow to reach Mainland China.
I will add one exception I have observed - when using my universities wireguard VPN that is approved by the CCP inside of China due to uni partnerships there. From China it had a lower ping in the middle of the US then a china optimized route in Japan did suggesting to me that approved excempted IPs do not go through the gfw whatsoever, even for logging, but n=1 so evidence is limited.
It depends on your location and the ISP, usually our China Optimized network offers better latency and higher transfer speeds. Keep in mind the servers are located in California.
